  Screen Resolution

When designing your sites, do you build your html pages with a certain screen resolution in mind?

The only reason I am asking is that I was viewing some sites with different resolutions, and in some cases, (800x600) you have to use the horizontal scroller to see the entire site, which was a bit annoying.

  Re: Screen Resolution

we always do 800 x 600 as the minimum although a lot more people now use 1024 x 768 as the minimum it all depends on what your market is for example if you are promoting items that have a high retail value then chances are the the customers aren't using an old PC which has a highest res of 800 x 600 as they would have a larger disposable income.

  Re: Screen Resolution

I still design most of my sites to a width of 760px, because there are still a significant percentage of 800x600 monitors out there, plus some people with bad eyesight probably run this resolution. Also, at 760px, most of the website can be printed (print width is about 660px).

There may come a time that we can design to a wider standard as people adopt better monitors, but I don't think we've reached that time yet. I asked this question on Sitepoint.com not that long ago so you'll probably be able to find more discussion there.

  Re: Screen Resolution

You should also consider the target demographic for the site subject itself.

So, for example, a videogames website is likely to have more tech-savvy users with better monitors than, say, a site about gardening techniques....

  Re: Screen Resolution

I made the move from 750px to 950px about a year ago, but only on sites that actually need the space. On sites that don't need to show tons of information at once, 750px can give a tighter, cleaner UI.

Lots of big sites are moving to 950px now so its about time everyone threw out their 15" monitors!!

I myself use 1920x1200 resolution on my Dell 2405FPW - everyone should have one of these!

  Re: Screen Resolution

Judging by the skip at my local tip today people are throwing out CRT monitors by the shed-load.

I will probably move up to 950 px by the end of the year - if we all do it then this will force folk into moving away from 800x600!

  Re: Screen Resolution

Hi - The most common screen resolution used today is 1024 x 768 so it makes sense to ideally design it to this resolution, but ensure it still displays correctly in smaller and larger resolutions

  Re: Screen Resolution

I still go for 800x600

Off the top of my head (you may have to check) 780 x whatever will give you the maximum width of an IE window including scrollbar width, the height will vary a bit.

From there you can make your site fluid if you want.

  Re: Screen Resolution

From looking at my server stats - 800 x 600 is the 4th most common screen resolution....

1. 1024 x 768
2. 1280 x 1024
3. 1280 x 800
4. 800 x 600

Ditto for some of my bigger clients. In fact 800 x 600 only makes up about 8% of the total while 1024x768 makes up over 50%
