Does anyone know of an easy way to stop spam comments on a Wordpress blog - this morning one of my blogs is being really targetted (over 200 spam comments in five minutes) and it's driving me nuts - I have already set the blog so that only registered users can post comments but somehow these spamming bar stewards seem to be getting around that - so any other ideas or come lunchtime I am just going to take the whole site offline for a while and hope they move on and pick on someone else...

Check if it's trackback blog spam (look in your logs and you'll see /trackback/ on the end of POST comments for your links) as that's why it's appearing even if you play with your comment settings etc.

If it is - try this http://seclab.cs.rice.edu/proj/trackback/ - I added this a couple of days ago and it does the trick nicely.

One of mine was targetted today too Keith - had about 100+ emails this morning it's getting on my nerves.

Askinet plugin should work - not got it installed on this site yet :\

The Akismet plugin traps the majority of spam and puts it into a holding area - I have found it to generate very rare false positives, but mostly a quick scan of the queue, followed by "delete all" sorts it out

Also, I was just reading about another plugin called Bad Behavior which seems to do a lot of filtering BEFORE the comment gets to the post stage by effectively cloaking your blog to known spam sources. Not tested it yet

just install the Spam Karma 2 plugin. I'd be lost without it.

    Had shedloads this morning too!

Using Akismet and that's trapping 99% of it.

There is this as well. Not tried it though

    Thanks for that Jason

WIll give it a go, as most of mine is trackback after looking through the logs.

I've been running the Maths plugin and it's doing me no good at all

akismet is trapping it all but I like to make sure it doesn't get anything genuine and that means it's taking longer and longer to scan through all the spam posts.

I'll try this trackback one now too!

Use the Bad Behaviour plugin in combination with the comment timeout plugin.

    Works a treat.
