Well I think I might have to give up on this thread because it's getting a bit irrelivent and boring.
Thanks for all the advice though Stu, regardless of what's been said, you've answered all my questions and I havn't seen any sign of an e-book!

I, like Stu, have been running websites with affiliate links on for some time - yet this thread is the first I've posted on - largely because most of the discussion threads on this board are defensive rather than helpful (e.g. people telling how wonderful they are but not actually being prepared to say how). I've also PM'd Stu over one item and found his reply perfectly courteous.
I've got no problem with Stu making money from teaching people what he does - seems like a perfectly logical progression to me and I commend him for it.
My problems with SEO are somewhat different - for example I've recently launched a '3 word' site. I'm amazed to find that it shot to the top of the MSN ratings - in China, Korea and France - but doesn't register at all in the UK or USA! Frankly, that seems bizarre to me, particularly as there's nothing Chinese, Korean or French about it. Anyone have any ideas?

Stu,
What are your thoughts on having a niche website with sub niche subdomains vs each sub niche having its own domain..
eg
niche = widgets
sub niche 1 = green widgets
sub niche 2 = blue widgets
sub niche 3 = cheap widgets
Subdomain route:
main site: www.widgets.co.uk
sub domains: www.green.widgets.co.uk, www.blue.widgets.co.uk, www.cheap.widgets.co.uk
Seperate domains:
www.greenwidgets.co.uk, www.bluewidgets.co.uk, www.cheapwidgets.co.uk
personally speaking, i buy a new domain every time but i have a reseller account for webspace so it costs me peanuts.
Never really worked with sub doms and don't know how Google view them. What i can say is that i rarely if ever, see a sud dom riding high on the serps.
hope that helps in some way?
Can anybody else offer any more info?

Yeah, I have a reseller domain as well so the hosting is not a problem.. and i suppose new domains are cheap enough..
As far as I am aware Google sees subdomains as seperate sites to an extent, but they are all related to the main domain and enjoy some of the page rank of the main domain.. so if you can link build the one site and this should, in theory, help your sub domains..
Although, you are quite right, how often does one see a sub domain at the top..
I think I agree with you.. www.bluewidgets.co.uk should, IMO, beat www.blue.widgets.co.uk as it is more of an authority for blue widgets.
Subdomains are good if you do them off an authority as it saves you having to start from scratch again
EG in my industry, I think oddschecker originally struggled with oddscheckerpoker.com but then when they switched to poker.oddschecker.com they had much better success
About the www.bluewidgets.co.uk VS www.blue.widgets.co.uk ,
Why not use a directory? e.g www.widgets.co.uk/blue or www.widgets.co.uk/blue-widgets .
I think it's an advantage on your PPC campaign (display and target url in adwords) in the context of widgets.
I'm not an SEO (neither PPC, RPG, LSD , XTZ etc.) expert, but I have seen many publishers doing that.
Cheers,
Dirvan
Because the theory is that my specialising in one very niche key phrase, you can ranking high for that key phrase and maybe even become an authority for that phrase. Using a directory dilutes your the phrase "blue widgets" for your site and therefore you will probably find it harder to rank for "blue widget" searches. Why not use a directory?
Sub directories are a bit different because they are classed as more independent of the main site then a directory. Again, in theory.
That is true, but that is more than made up for by the link trust and SEO power of an authority site.Because the theory is that my specialising in one very niche key phrase, you can ranking high for that key phrase and maybe even become an authority for that phrase. Using a directory dilutes your the phrase "blue widgets" for your site and therefore you will probably find it harder to rank for "blue widget" searches.
A subdomain on a pr6+ powerful site would be much easier to rank for than a brand new yet highly targetted domain.
I agree with the above.
Brand new domains are a pig to work with, which is why so many people opt to buy established domains when they become available.
Even better if the domain you buy has an established and relevant link structure in place.
