Number 1 on Google in 36 hours
Hi guys, thought i would share a story with you to give you a smile and help build some confidence in niche marketing for the newbies.
2 days ago - 25th April, was my birthday. As birthdays go, it was fairly ordinary, my other half was ill in bed so i sat at my pc and did some work (or is it fun?)
I bought a *brand new* domain name and some websapce, knocked up a quick 1 page affiliate website, did a small amount of 'back room magic' and left to soak overnight.
Yesterday, 24 hours on, i was at number 3 on Google, pretty good eh?
Today i wake up and find i'm number 1.
Was a pretty good birthday after all.
What's my point? - If you start to think small instead of big, you can dominate a niche in 36 hours, as clinically proven by me
I thank you.
Stu

Good for you Stu!
But there is more work involved in that, if I buy a domain called:
http://www.ILikeToJumpFromMyBedAndKi...eOnMondays.com
and I use that in the meta tags TITLE "I Like To Jump From My Bed And Kiss My Girlfriend Everywhere On Mondays" ... and then I do a search on Google, I'll be first in Google's Page results Forever!...but nobody is going to look for that term...or maybe some crazy man like me
I've been in SEO for some years and as Leec said, keep it in the listing, if you were able to get indexed without doing almost anything, good for you!... well done!
But there are more factors involved... If you need more SEO advice, you only need to ask

Depends what your domain and niche is as well. Care to share? If it was something like silent-films-of-cheese.com then it's fairly simple to jump to the top - if it was something like playstation3andWii.com it'd be a lot harder to do. A few nice links from those lovely authority domains we all got tucked away can do wonders to some sites, it's getting them to stick that takes time!

i am extremely well versed in SEO techniques hence the quick rise to the top.
it will also stay at the top until someone else comes along to knock me off. It's a niche at the end of the day. Google couldn't give a rats ass about my domain, no sandboxing or penalties.
I play a numbers game. i have numbers of extremely targeted websites that make me money, some great, some on drip feed. But the point is:
I look at how much these sites bring me in on a yearly basis.
While others are spending a year building and seo'ing their 'all in one shopping' site. i have made and seo'd 20 niche sites and made a years wage.
I do have some long term projects on board but i do them more for fun and challenge.
I still maintain that number 1 from nothing in 36 hours is pretty sweet.

Don't forget that it's a fresh domain / page which always generally get to #1 on niche terms in the first few days - they tend to drop quickly afterwards though.

I think its an awesome achievement - i think the points made re : is it actually a niche anyone will search on are valid, but even so, to get indexed and ranking so highly within that period of time is still good going.
Nice one Stu!

You mean something like this?
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...UK%7CcountryGB
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...G=Search&meta=
Been like that for most of the time since I registered this niche domain. Drops down for a while until trawled again.
Well done though. It's nice to get a good listing but as has been said. Keeping it is the hard task.

Well done Stu.
I would leave it a few weeks and if you are still top and the term is not too obscure, write up a detailed case study then post it on your blog and you should have a great piece of linkbait on your hands.

Hi Stu
I don't doubt your success at all and totally agree that finding the right long tail phrases can work alot better than going after big phrases that'll take years to crack, however...
Like James says above, getting to number one on Google for a phrase isn't difficult, getting to number one for a phrase that brings traffic to your site is a little more difficult and getting to number one for a phrase that brings traffic which converts is the challenge. I know you're not going to divulge the keyword, but it would be interesting to know how much traffic is generated daily by the search term?

I would love to know the site name and the niche search term but I guess you won't post that here?
As others say it is easy to get a term like "I Like To Jump From My Bed And Kiss My Girlfriend Everywhere On Mondays" to number 1 but if the search term is something that is never going to get searched on, then being No1 is pretty useless.
I have a couple of number 1 positions for terms that are searched like once every 3/4 months (No good to me) but my site is not niche, I entered a very competitive area with some big players.
If you have managed this on a Niche that gets a good number of searches and will earn you money then hats off to you - fantastic job
What do you mean by 'back room magic'?
Thanks
Stuart

its a throwaway, low search domain ( 2 words ).
I actually bought and designed this domain just to document it on my blog, to see how fast you can actually reach number 1 on Google. It may drop again but i very much doubt it.
The search term is 'contemporary vases' - it's number 1 on 'pages for the uk' for that search term, number 2 for 'the web'
Its also getting picked up for other terms as we speak.
The challenge was to see how quickly i could get there, not how much money i can make
i build loads of these sites.
It competes with a 101,000 other search terms. I'm not excited about how much money it will make me because it's just the latest in a long line of websites that drip feed. What i am excited by is exactly how quick it got to the top of Google.
Even when you fluke it, it can take a week or so.
I tried a whole new process for this one and it 'seems' to have worked a treat.
Am i wrong here? - someone please tell me otherwise.

Well done Stu,
While we all may debate the value of the number 1 ranking because we don't know the search volume, I think Stu has highlighted a very important point that most newbies don't know about.
Developing a general site is very difficult and time consuming to optimise. Niche, tightly focused sites are much easier and more effective in a lot of cases, and often lead to a better customer experiance for someone searching that term. Of course it is a balance between finding an uncompetitive niche and one with volume.
Like Stu said, having 20 tightly focused niche sites will often do much better than one site that focused on 20 different areas.
