for me it would be b.

the previous two months i started on 2 / 3 extra sites to add to my current handful and its just been too much, i cant do all the work required, some sites have suffered and ive learnt my lesson now!

i cant even manage 10 different sites.

its a tough one, id say its easier to make 50, 100, 200 sites that make money but in small moderation than to make 1 that makes a lot.

however 1 that makes a lot goes from being "a site in my portfolio" to a business. If you have say 200 sites, cheap-handbags-and-belts.com with a few banners, feeds and a bit of adsense, it might make you £20 a day profit but to a buyer its nothing.

Invest your time and make something thats, well unique, one site that makes you want to use it and you have a business. If done right it an easily outperform 200 short term profit sites and the best thing is you have something to sell when you want out.

4 years ago I had over 200 sites, many of them datafeeds or search engine feeds and made a living - at the time I figured, hey that sites makes £10 a month - 200 of them makes me £2000. However now I only have 2 sites and one of those i just to prop up PR, so one site in reality.

If I was entering the market now I would advise anyone to make a brand for yourself - keep people coming back. Disposable sites still work - but its easier IMO to work on one site and build its rankings and brand and thus to make cash.

Diversification - I'd prefer to have 10 sites doing moderately well than 1 making 15 times the money.

But to answer the question - One good site (which people would recommend to others) in a profitable sector.

    Barry,
That was my EXACT trail of thought yesterday. Ie 100 sites make £20 a month each = £2000 ! I don't know which was to go to be honest as I have a few sites now which drip feed and if I had a lot of drip feed sites, then obviously the money would be coming from all angles (allbeit small amounts but when lumped together, quite big amounts)

I have never been a person to put all his eggs in 1 basket, but from reading the answers so far, it seems that is what the majority prefer ?

I hate having all my 'eggs in one basket' as you say, its a bit frightening when I think about it. Saying that if I did drop the basket I am in a position where there would be a few eggs left I could pick up and put in a new basket

I really cant cope with the work of updating and upgrading soooo many sites anymore - and I cant delegate any work, because I find it hard to trust someone else to do the work the way I would want. So thats why I stick to doing just the one or two.

Saying that if your starting out, maybe it is an idea to make a few sites as I once did and then pick the one thats working best and bring it forward at a later date when you know whats working?

Some good thoughts and idea's there Barry. I am also the same as in delegating my work to anyone else, I am a 1 man band (apart from my missus who put's up with constantly listening to me babbling on AGAIN about affiliate marketing lol) and find it hard to trust anyone either in those ways.

I also have the same figure in mind, ie £2500 a month so I am implementing stu foster's method of setting myself this target :

    Ie £2500 a month is £30,000 a year so £30,000 / 365 = £82.19 per day

So I am going to concentrate on making the £82.19 per day (100 sites is only 82p per day each lmao) nah I know my goals and what I want to acheive short term and then once I have built up my knowledge, finances, wisdom and experience then I will concentrate on maybe just a few sites.

I'm telling you mate it's the way forward.

85 sites at a quid a day...... hahahaha!

i personally have a couple of high bankers that need constant work, the rest of my sites are niche (unsurprisingly).

The problem with one site is this: you can pour your heart and sole into it and make it a great site, making some good money, with good rankings and search engine traffic..

then one morning while you are eating your corn flakes, you realise that google doesn't love you anymore. You have gone from being in the top 10 in your niche keyword(s) to 1000. Your traffic drops dramatically.. your business is shot to pieces and of course Google will give no indication as to why. You lose your house, your wife, your dog, your car, your golf clubs and eventually the shirt off your back.. (alright, i've take it too far!)

So having more than one is a good way to spread the risk. As Alan Sugar said last week, you have to hedge your bets.

Personally I think 100 is too many, unless they are really niche and can maintain a top ranking with little work. Having a couple of bigger sites that you spend a lot of your time on and then 20 to 30 small niche sites is probably a good bet.
