Just wanted views from adword veterans on what strategies tend to work on adwords to gain decent returns. Now i appreciate that it depends on the keywords but there must be certain things that can and can't be done to improve the conversation rate.

I've been running adwords for almost a year, average spend around £200/month. At present i think i have the right keywords targetted, maybe not the correct values, and i still only use a single campaign with a generalised advertisement.

Is creating a few advertisements for specific keywords a better way to go? Do you do this within the same campaign, or seperately completely?

If a keyword is converting quite well would you stick to that, or increase the value?

Would you always intend to promote within the top 3 position each time?

Is there a way of finding out the keywords your competitors are using?

Just looking for general opinions like that.

i'll give you one piece of advice - others can add to this.

I personally *never* go for a top three listing.

You tend to be the victim of what i call 'curiousity clicks'.

Think about it. If someone is prepared to look further than the end of their nose i.e down the right hand side, they are a hotter prospect.

I always aim for position 4-6, conversion rates for me are much higher. Click rate obviously goes down but they are usually wasted clicks anyway.

I'm sure that doesn't apply for everyone here but it's good advice nonetheless.

if you want more clicks, separate your keywords into very closely related ad groups & write ads that are very specific to your keywords.

you will get more clicks..but i wouldn't know if it will convert at a better rate.
