I'm looking at a new niche to focus on and everything looks good - few competitors on Google etc, except for one thing - Pricegrabber is in first place on Google. Now my thinking is that I can get to No. 3 easily so it should be okay but what do all you affiliate gods think?

Re: ME vs the Giant
I'm deffinately not an 'Affiliate God', but I'd say if you think the niche is profitable and you can get the traffic, go for it. Don't let a big name competitor put you off.
Well that's my opinion. Good luck

Mate I have to be honest, most of the time when I get to a site like Pricegrabber I move off, not that its not valuable, but comes with so much other stuff.
I searched earlier for 'Rotavator hire' and ended up on a site (like, but not) Pricegrabber and ended up just closing the site, they had no info on hired rotavators at all, and these are some of the leading companies in the industry, not sure if they are after the blanket coverage that Ebay are after but don't understand it myself.
I would go for it and try to become the expert of the niche, thats your selling point over a large company like Pricegrabber, they adopt a 'stack em high, sell em cheap' approach.
That's fantastic! I just learned a new word in English. 'Rotavator'

Don't think that just because you are not sure you can get first place that its still not worth a punt, not everyone searching for a keyword goes to the first site listed, and even those that do might pull back into google and check a few more. I for one when searching avoid the price comparison sites at the top, thats not always what i'm interested in seeing.
Plus, being top for organic isn't the only way, consider PPC on it if you think its worth a try. Don't forget also that whilst a big company, these sites can be toppled from the high positions, maybe not if it was their landing/home page, but drilled down pages aren't always as strong as you'd think.
Good luck, give it a go, it won't cost you much to try
Thanks guys, I was just about decided on trying it out and you have all convinced me to give it a go. I'll let you know how I get on!!
Definitely go for it. Top 3 is fine. think about it - when did you take the 1st result in google as being gospel? I have a few keywords where my site appears on the 2nd or 3rd page of the google serps and still gets a fair bit of traffic.
The message you give to your visitors may be the same as the site at number one but if your content is more than just the data feed from the retailer (i.e. unique to you) then you've got a chance of converting much better than your competition.
