  Cross Browser Compatibility

Hi,

I have developed a site for a client and have tested it in all the Windows browsers I can think of (IE6/7, FF, Opera, Netscape and Safari).

My client has told me that somebody he knows had a look at the site using a Mac and some of the site (mainly the menu) is all out of line.

I don't have access to a Mac and have no idea what browser he was using. Is there any way of testing this via a Windows PC or is there any emulation browsers/sites to test it?

Many thanks

Jason

As a web developer you should really have a MAC for just this purpose - suggest you get onto e-bay and purchase one - it's the best way to ensure compatibility

well there's macs and there's macs. The intel based ones tend to behave very differently from traditional ones, especially if you're using active content like flash. So if you're going to buy one for testing, you'll actually need to buy two or three.

If you're really serious about it, try BrowserCam : Screen capture and Remote Access service for cross platform compatibility testing and HTML design quality assurance. which will let you test on any os/browser combination you can think of. It's not cheap though.

Personally speaking I just develop in Firefox and then validate the html and css on every page to w3c standards. If that doesn't work on a mac, then tough luck on the mac user.

The price of $19.95 for one day isn't bad if you only use it at the final stage of production on a major project.

The site also highlights the number of browser/operating system combinations there are available. It would not be reasonable for designers to check them all.

I also check in IE6 which probably covers 96% of my visitors. ( I also check for functionality rather than looks with javascript and flash disabled.)

If people use unusual browser/operating system combinations they should be used to seeing menu out of line and either accept it or get a different browser.
