Lightbulb Buying a domain, help on drafting first contact?

Hi guys, I am looking to buy a domain that I am after, I have a email address & phone number of the person who owns it. So I am just drafting an email to send them.

Some of you have done this plenty of times, so I thought I should ask for suggestions & comments.

Quote:
Hello XXXXXX, I found your details on the whois for the domain xxxxxxxxxxxx.com

I am interested in buying this domain, would you consider selling it?

If so how much would you be looking for it?

let me know

thanks

Kandevil
Obviously fairly simple, but that will do won't it?

I'd be tempted to go more for:

Quote:
XXXXXX,

I am interested in buying this domain from you and would like to make you a cash offer.

I would be looking to offer £x for it. Would you consider selling your domain name to me for this amount?

Regards,

Kandevil
Just my 2p worth.

I wish I had these kind of emails though!

Unfortunately there is a lot of spam flying around that looks and sounds exactly like your draft email - we get a few emails like this every week which we usually don't respond to. They seem to be mostly automatically generated for the purpose of discovering whether the contact email address is active.

If I really wanted to buy a domain I would check first that it is not available on one of the domain sales sites like Sedo.com, then try an email to the contact address as you suggested (perhaps copying it to the postal address too), then if there is still no response after about week or so, you could try contacting the domain hosting company and ask them to forward a message to the owner. This usually ensures the domain owner knows you mean business.

Good luck.
