Possible for networks to implement conversion tracking?

I started using an aff program in the US the other day that supports Google conversion tracking. Basically you go through the steps to set up conversion tracking in your adwords account then at the last step where it shows you the javascript to paste onto your site just copy the conversion tracking ID and pass this as a query string param in your links, gid=[id] and conversion tracking starts working. Presumably the merchant just put some server side code on their thank you page that writes out the Google javascript with the correct id added. The merchant also supports Yahoo and MSN tracking in the same way.

This seems like an excellent idea. Is there any chance that networks/merchants could implement something similar over here ?
