how to get rid of a page indexed by google?

Hi all

Im using wordpress for a affiliate site and making a sale a day or two which i am happy with considering its only a few weeks old

i did a tidy up of the pages and on tracking have realised the flippin best visited page is a page google has cached and is showing for a keyword but the page on wordpress doesnt exist anymore due to the permalinks etc being optimised

Question i have is, is it a matter of time before google will drop it or am i better of optimizing another page for that keyword so google replaces is? I could be loosing sales due to the oversight

Cheers if anyone could help me

Rob

Re-create the page with the same name, and do a 301 permanent re-direct to the new page.

If you leave it as is, it will eventually dissapear.

It would be better to redirect the old page to a new one.

If you want to remove it from google though, you can use google webmaster tools, and that lets you remove URL's from their index.

The url for google webmaster tools is:

https://www.google.com/webmasters/to...overview?pli=1

You need to add your site, and then add a bit of code to your site so that you can prove to google you own it.

You should be using it anyway, as its really usefull. Tells you how fast google is spidering your site, if it has any problems spidering anything, and also your main searches that bring people to your site. Sign up (its free), add your site, and have a good look round.

There also an equivalent at Yahoo, which again is really usefull, at:

https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/mysites

In the htaccess file for your site, you need to add the following line:

Redirect 301 /path/to/old/file.html http://www.domain.tld/path/to/new/file.html

If you want a page removed from the index after deleting from your site:

Redirect gone /path/to/old/file.html

For best results, always do either of the above for any changes to the URLs of your site.
