There are some great hosting providers in the UK and I'd go with UK every time.

The main reason is if I need to get in touch with anyone quickly I always prefer speaking on the phone as opposed to sending emails back and forth or having to phone the US every hour to ask why my website is down

Thats the best idea by calling on the phone. Many hosting providers provide you with UK Toll Free numbers to get fast and instant response.
