I tend to leave a saucer of milk
    out for Google every Wednesady.

Seems to do the trick for me.

    (I still can't believe I sold those B******s
that domain for 200 quid back in Feb '99).

Yeah, google is a real pain for us when they do this, over the weekend we had around 300 pages de-indexed, then they came back thoughout the past 2 days plus another 160 extra pages were indexed last night so im happy with the results.

Still a couple of old pages to come back in but im sure they will do soon.

Best thing to do is not change anything when pages get de-indexed, just sit and wait, if they don't come back after a couple of weeks then think about changing something.

Did you make any changes or did you just leave it as it was?

Reason I asked was that I had a page that was top on certain terms and like the others have said it fell into obscurity for a while.

I made a few changes and it came back after a week. Obviously, I wondered whether it would have done that without the changes?

Maybe it would, but it's not so easy to be rational at the time
