  Wordpress or code my own

Hi everyone

Ive been in affiliate marketing for a while and done well with my first site which is a wordpress site and ranks really high

Now im onto my second in a area which would look best with catergory graphics on the front but so many wordpress themes dont use 100% width or so

Still skint, paying off credit cards so was wondering if there were many people here who use wordpress or just bit the bullet, sat down and coded their own?

my html is ok, css a bit but its just the time when i could be getting on with the marketing and backlinks

Whats your views on your circumstances?

Cheers

Rob

I don't understand this,

Can you explain what you need to do, html and css would be fine but if you want to update it with regular content and have pages which update automatically then you need to go with wordpress.

Re: Wordpress or code my own

Sorry, will teach me not to reread my waffle

Well, most wordpress blogs dont seem to span the whole page but have a large area on the left and right but could do with more space on the actual blog itself

As for categories, i would like to have an image for each in the middle but can only get say 3 images across without having to make them to small

hope that makes more sense...

Cheers for your reply just now

Rob

THe width issue, What you need is a 'fluid' theme - this stretches to 100% the browser size. The problems with this is that images cannot retract so if you have 3 images across at 300px each in width. A user using 800x600 resolution the text would contract but the images would not.

I'm stil not 100% sure on what you mean by categories in the middle ect.. do you mean 3 categories on the homepage, each with an image above it and say latest 5 entries to each cateogry listed?

For affiliate websites I like fixed width because of the importance of mobile devices and smaller viewing areas, there is nothing worse for users scrolling horizontally as well as vertically.

Sure, it can be done using a flexible width structure but why worry when you can just get on with rattling out pages with a wordpress fixed width theme.

If your looking for a custom solution, then buy one, there affordable, or if your on a tight budget then altering the CSS in a theme is quite easy after a little practice.

I construct all my high earning sites on Wordpress engine and love it. If your careful and strip out some of the clutter it's one the best "off the shelf" SEO product available - and for free.

ah makes sense about the fluid so not really ideal then doh!

Categories, im so explaining it wrong arent i

I just mean a image for say shoes, one for boots, one for heels etc but having 3-5 across

But as you, it would probably go all wrong with a fluid one

shame though

cheers for your reply, appreciated

Rob

Will a Fluid theme not shrink to fit mobile devices as it would a lower screen res monitor?

I have never used mobile device to browse so cannot check!!

I stick with fixed width anyway as I think they are easier to read... and you can ensure more consistent presentation... I hate pages that render only a few lines across the whole page...

Coded their own what???

Are you on about coding small static sites? If so I do that, but only with php to chop up the template into reusable components..

Or are you on about coding your own theme???

There are loads of wordpress themes out there, find one that is close to what you want and modify that... alternatively there are wordpress theme "kits" available, which have very basic template that you can modify...

For med sized content sites I would always try and use WP as it has a lot of useful features like pings ... has good seo, simple to use and has a massive list of plugs...
