Just a quick few questions on this after spending hours trying to research the UK law on advertising adult material.

If someone can help me here it would be much appreciated.

What are the laws of advertising adult material for sale including R18 films?
What content can you show on your homepage if you have a .co.uk domain name?
What type of disclaimers should be published on the website.

I just want to put something in place which would keep me out of trouble with the law and the OPA.

    Advice would be most welcome.

I don't see that you'd get into trouble being an affiliate for an adult site. When you think of all the hardcore / extremely odd porn out there on the net, and the owners don't get into trouble. As long as its not anything obviously illegal.

If you are an affiliate, it means that the merchant has the products on their site, so if they have and are fine, then you should be too.

Just have a look at whats out there, and how the info is displayed, any warnings etc and you should be ok.

The only niche that I know you really need to be careful about promoting is the gaming world. I worked in the casino industry for 5 years before becoming an internet marketer and know the gambling comission have strict laws on gaming promotion in the UK.

With adult websites I kind of agree with the first reply by TBP, there are two many out there these days. Just go to a high PR site in a Google search for your keywords and have a look at their layout; if they have the promotions inside the site and disclaimers on the home page do the same.

I've also looked into the adult world for affiliates and would recommend a residual income program rather than DVD sales. If you join a residual program you get paid for the prospects sign up and receive a payoff every month for as long as they're a member; use this program in your website, thats where your cash will be dude.

It is illegal to promote (even as an affiliate) R18 films in the UK unless you are a sex shop licenced with your local authority (and as I understand it those licences are not cheap).

This thread from about 18 months ago explains more:

I showed my future mummy-in-law that range the other night... I thought she was going to expire... she'd never seen anything like it.

I'll definately be featuring it on my new undies site... it's absolutely brill!

Cheers, and it's going to get better as well. we are their biggest UK retailer so we have a very good relationship with them in terms of them being open to our suggestions. For example lets just say that one of the promo items that they are doing will have a certain "buzz" about it

Had a look at the DVD thread. What about other "adult" goods? Loads of UK adult sites have affiliate schemes - eg good ol' Anne Summers. Can't say id ever be even slightly interested in anything hardcore but what about a few jokey items from a reputable UK site? Anyone any experience?

No problem at all with other adult goods afaik - it's just the DVDs.
