From my experience, I'd support what KirstyM and smingle say in this thread.

I'd aim to steadily build links, rather than look to generate thousands at a time using an automated tool. I'd also suggest that any link building campaign should go hand in hand with adding new content to your site.

I personally wouldn't go for the steady link building route, unless you're in no rush to get ranked high.

You should not get penalized even if you got 1000's of links a day as long as you don't pay for links to try and increase your serp positions.

Im not disagreeing with any advise on this thread because im not a SEO expert, im just going on my own experiences which worked for me.

That will be the most effective and the best advise yet in my opinion

Being a complete NooB, what exactly are back links.

I have a website in the gifts sector, is it best for me to submit my site to all gift related directories or even shopping ones?

Where can I get a list of directories to submit to?

    Welcome to the forum.

Backlinks are links that "link back" to your site. If someone sees your site and likes it they will include your website address on their site without you having to do anything This is known as a one-way or non-reciprocal link.

If you choose to you can gain links by exchaging links with a siteto get them to link to yours. This is know as a reciprocal link. These links are a lot easier to get when you're starting out.

Best way to find directories is to search on google. The one most folks submit to is gumtree it will get you index on google in double quick time. My fastest time is a few hours.

Any questions be sure to ask.

Good luck hope it all works out well for you.

    Regards

I won't say any more than this.... directories like this are not going to get you anywhere - particularly in the long run.

To build backlinks, I am using Pligg-o-matic.

I usually don't submit a lot so this SEO tool suits me well.

Not many people ever say that and imo its very important.

There will always be folks who say look I got 2 squillion directory entries and someone else who says they 2 quadrillion articles and mega backlinks and it never did them any harm.

Yes, and my mate Fred sped up and down the motorways for years at 90mph and never got caught until one day he got banned for 5 years for causing a crash.

Funny though isn't it, whether its big SEO forums or blogs, I have never seen a published A/B test on any of this or any other stuff for that matter.

So what are we left with ?
I'm no expert, but I have no evidence on who the experts actually are.
So you have to get the evidence empirically:

Look at the sites that have been consistently near the top of G.
See what they've done. Its not a big mystery.
    Don't do anything extreme.
and to quote Kirsty again - put yourself in Googles shoes.

Oh and do a search for GPS Receivers and someone tell me how this page:
    GPS Receivers
    got to position 2 ?!

PS. I think its something to do with content ;-)

Arggh, my eyes! :cry Content is King I suppose, however badly it's formatted.

Why don't people try adding more content to their own sites, instead of hiring non-English speaking people to write dozens of illegible articles that use the same anchor text over and over again.

I'm not sure if badly written and formatted content would be King! I rather think it would be a barrier to your success and opportunity to your competitors.
