Mike Davidson - How to Snatch an Expiring Domain
There is a co.uk domain that I am watching to become available. I worked the deletion cycle out and it should've been available from 17th April. I know there is always give or take a few extra days.
I really would like this domain - is there anything I can do to make sure I "get in first" because it may be a popular name for those rotten people who snatch them up to sell them on at inflated prices.

namejet
dropcatcher co.uk .. haven't used personally following a very rude / aggressive email from them
Does drop catching work on co.uk domains? I didn't think it did.
There are definately drop catchers for .co.uk domains, although I haven't personally used them myself.
There have been a couple of domains that I waited patiently for myself, and they were snapped up the instant they became available, there was no way a human could of done it that fast.
Did used to be a member of Nominet and so had access to their Automaton system, and it would be a simple job to write some scripts to get it to snag domains as soon as they became available.
Have you thought of contacting the current owner - uk domains seem to be protected for about a month and you may be able to get the current owner to renew and sell to you.
Or, contact the registrars?
Just read a couple of interesting statistics from the Nominet Domain Report:
Apparently, the average time for a domain name to be available for after dropping before its re registered is just 10 seconds!
And 70% of domains of domains due for renewal are actually renewed.
Thanks everybody.
This domain was due for renewal back in January 08. The owners opted to have their address omitted from whois, and there are no contact details at all. I checked out the wayback machine and found that they actually had a notice on their that the site was for sale!!! Very annoying that I didn't have this idea last year! I am surprised that it STILL says suspended all this time afterwards. I know that 123reg charge a penalty of £200 if you renew once it has lapsed, don't know if that is usual. Don't want to pay that much!
I have had dealings with Chris, who owns dropcatcher, before with one of his other ventures and must say I wouldn't touch him with a bargepole! I am not surprised to hear about a rude and aggressive email from him.
There is another name that is available and may be just as good, but as my first choice was an established site with backlinks I thought that would be my better choice? Or does google look at it as a NEW domain once it has dropped?
