    Nominet To Offer Online Transfers

I did blog about it, but it's worth sharing with more than 3 people...

Nominet announced yesterday that online transfers will be available from the 25th June at £10 a pop (or £10 per bulk list). Should make life a bit easier! :tup

I still think it would be better for Nominet to do more. Like zero charging.

I'd rather pay a little more per domain and no transfer fee like ICANN instead of the rubbish available from Nominet.

Interested to know there are more employed by Nominet than ICANN and yet ICANN handle far more domain transfers.

Great news atleast, the current process and filling in papers is a pain. But how will they cover the identification issue?

John - I think most people just register domains for themselves or their organisations and rarely, if ever, transfer them. In that respect it seems fair that the admin cost of a transfer be borne by those who want it rather than shared amongst those who will likely never use it. Also I don't believe ICANN handle transfers or indeed any day-to-day admin themselves. They set policy and the individual registries deal with admin.

Ian - As it's being done as part of their online admin system I presume they feel your successful login is sufficient proof of your ID.

I wonder about the identification issue as well.

I don't think a lot of people will have access to their system. They are awful at sending out peoples registration details to them.

Nominet has been a farce from the early days.
WTF an online concept like a domain name ever had to involve paperwork has always been beyond me.
It's a self-serving waste of time and money and online transfers, although welcome, is just how it should have been from the start.
The system should also be totally automated and the cost of maintaining the systems part of the domain registration fee.

    Exactly!
    Less staff needed for administration.
Correct acquisition pricing which will encourage domain trading and decent private sales pricing.
    No silly charges.
Ability to quickly change registration details.

I am fed up when I register a domain, to find that Nominet has set up FIVE ACCOUNTS in my name, because some were bought off the shelf and others privately acquired. Especially galling when they should all be in one account. Even more annoying is after paying to transfer, Nominet then want a second payment for any changes, so for instance if a business changes name or goes from non limited to limited etc, then you have to pay again for the transfer.

Dump the fees and make it "free". As I said earlier. I'd happily pay .com prices for a .co.uk if the transfer was free.

A business name change is free if the limited company number stays the same. I know because I've just changed the name on 100+ domains in one quick, free online process.
