The whois represents the legal owner of the domain name only, if the domain was a trademark name or infringement, it would be your brother who would get in trouble.

I know you better than that though Rob lol !

I can see no reason to not have your own name on it other than ones for dodgy purposes.

Probably not related but I had a long discussion with my hosting company recently when I asked them for another C class server, they told me Google looks at the persons name who registers the domain more than an IP address.

I always thought that if you want to set up a network of sites that link cleanly with each other they need to be hosted on different IP's and class thingys, but they recon thats not the case.

Aspirin

You are spot on to be honest, thats what i was intending to do. As many here probably already do, make a network of sites on different ip's

Some people have said the same ip doesn't matter, and i respect their views totally but for my peace of mind i would like to make the network on different ip's

Hense where I was coming from, the whois. Make the whois different as well

The actual domains i am looking to create wont actually be money making so in a way only need to register them as private use domains as they will be info only

Good to hear about your convo...intruiging

Rob

Re: is a whois detail legally binding?

What about companies that put their own details down as the registrant? Does that mean google thinks all of those sites are owned and controlled by one person. That would be a big mistake because of course the domain registration company has no control at all.

Google (so they say) always strive for accuracy so one would assume that they dont make that link or at some point will correct it if they do currently.

Infact with some very large registration companies/ISPs putting their details in as the owner its hard to imagine top google brains sat round a desk and decided to link all sites with the same name. Its easy to see why that would go wrong!

I have domains registered in both ways but actually prefer the above because I dont want my own name on the contact details should any stalker want to try and track me down !

The other thing that was discussed recently on the official google blogs was using subdomains. Google said that these are treated as individual domains and if one ranks well it well hold no juice over the other subdomains. A while ago I bought a particularly snappy domain that I can now use to create infinite subdomains , eg pillows.shop.com or elephants.shop.com you know what I mean. Seemed to have no problem ranking well, you build a brand, and save money and time managing domains!

Of course everyone has a different opinion/experience as to what works best - so let us know how it goes !

What if the different whois are at the same address? eg, husband has one, wife has another?

I'm guessing Google would be wise to that and might check address's as well.

How could they check addresses, if the whois was registered as private (which is fine if they are not making any money and were just information sites)
