Seems everyone is shy today.. Ok I'll start the bragging :

Spent £1000 on adwords on a short and very targeted campaign in 2004 and pulled £34k profit off it in one month, (and no it wasn't brand bidding !) nice 3,400% ROI.

So that's £500 spent for a £17k profit.

Ahh those were the days

Very impressive.

Was that in the finance sector Shane?

I bought a domain once for £5.98 which generated me around £50,000 in the following 6 months. That was back in 2004/5 too - the good old days.

Re: Best £500 you ever spent on marketing?

Mike beat me to it, the best money I ever spent was on a domain name and hosting The rest I improvised.

I have spent little money on marketing in the past, I have tried a little bit of PPC but that area is not my strongest. I have spent money on SEO techniques I use which have done ok, which I plan to use again. Nothing spectacular, but I always make back more than I spend and I have some good domains ranking pretty well, which in themselves are worth money, think of it as a sort of investment.

I'm still learning myself, one day I hope to hit that nail right in the middle of its little ol' head and I will be onto something good. I dont make thousands per week, but I am comfortable with what I earn at present which is only something I can build on.

Some great ones there!

Not as good as the others, but for me it was...

buying a pin-striped suit a month ago (for a lot less than £500).

Last week I was waiting outside a tube station in the City waiting to meet the CEO of one of the affiliate networks to discuss some projects. Journalist comes up to me from City AM newspaper and asks me if I could spare five minutes. I was hesitant and originally told her I'm busy, but then I thought 'great PR opportunity!' so said, yeah. I ended up answering several questions about inflation and the state of the economy - because I had my pinstriped suit on, she thought I was a stockbroker or something I encouraged her not only to mention the biz name, but the URL ... she misspelt the domain name a few times, but I made sure she got it right. So now a few thousand people in the City know about Azam Marketing!

Did similar thing when David Blaine was living in a transparent box for a few days by the Thames. Put t-shirt on with one of our domain names... and appeared on Canadian TV.

Like the David Blaine one - we went to see him as well and we noticed all the worlds press very close to us.

We thought about how much money we could have made had we been selling plastic binoculars to people stood on the bridge for a quid!

Yeah prob the best £500 I spent on marketing was when I was getting top on PPC for 'crazy frog' with Jamster. Absolutely unjustifiable profits from that campaign.

Right, I have £500, now I want a story like one of those to go with it!

On a bit of a tangent, how much does a decent suit cost these days Nadeem?

Mine was priced at £260, but it was the last one left and the geezer at French Eye gave it to me for £160 as apparently they had a new range for 'this season'. I really don't care if some fashion guru in Paris or Milan commands what style of suit we must wear 'this season' (though I should increase my knowledge of fashion slightly, as I asked him to do turn-ups on the trousers, and he said they had gone out of fashion ten years ago ) He threw in a free shirt for me as well which was on sale for £30.

Any more 'best marketing spends'?
