Question Own .co.uk but not .com - any research done on lost traffic?

Client is starting a new business, but only the .co.uk of the domain name is available. He is wondering what proportion of people may try the .com by mistake, see it's not right and then re-enter .co.uk.

Will be advertised online via search, email and affiliate marketing, so the .co.uk will be linked to, but they are worried about a small proportion of repeat traffic entering .com instead of .co.uk.

Obviously it depends how the domain name is marketed, but any idea how much traffic a UK business may lose if they own the .co.uk but not the .com?

Thanks.

I was in a similar situation. Had the .co.uk but not the .com

When I did acquire the .com I set up the redirect and monitored the numbers. I could count the daily numbers on one hand on a site that was probably getting about 3000 UV a day. Nothing to worry about.

One way of definately getting around the issue is to market the actual address like elephant.co.uk do. That way people think of the brand they automatically think about the .co.uk element. Should stop the vast majority from trying .com
