McAfee 'Fix protection' after update bug ! ?

Hi, not sure if this is the right forum but I am sure its important, given the sort of information at risk on affiliate's PC's.

For the last few months we've been getting 'Your PC is not protected - click here to fix' from McAfee installed on a PC. Systemguard is getting switched off and to 'Manual'. Scary thing is, when you fix it through the McAfee security centre, everything appears to be OK. But is not. Systemguard is still off and 'Manual'.

There's a bit about it online, but it hasn't been fixed - McAfee haven't really figured out what is wrong. Seems to occur after you get an update. On the face of it there doesn't seem to be anything strange installed on anyone's PC.

Was all working perfectly for the last 6 years !

2 steps I've tracked down online so far:
1. Set updates to download, but not auto-install.
2. After installing manually, do this: Start - Run - services.msc - find McAfeeSystemguard on the list - Properties - Startup type to Automatic - check Service Status is 'started'.

Having to do that after every update at the moment.

McAfee isn't great, and often a real PITA.

Would be best to just install it, and put something like Kaspersky on which is excellent, and came top in a number of magazines test on anti virus.

Doesn't use many system resources and very quick, can really recommend it. They update several times a day as well for fast protection against new viruses etc.

I was mainly posting in case others have the same problem.

McAfee does gobble resources, but this is the first time its been a problem in 6 years, latterly with it on all day on broadband / wireless, so I have a philosophy of if it ain't broke... (touch wood of course!)

It may break, but atm its still working - just a nuisance and from bitter experience with installing new software on PC's that are already full of stuff - I'll wait a while.

One thing I do wonder is when the boxes in the shops will start carrying a label in big letters saying 'By the time you buy this, it is out of date'.
