Re: Which Prize Would You Prefer?

I like getting stuff. Doens't have to be huge expensive things like a car (Despite many trys I've not won one of them yet) but things like consoles have gone down very well - as have vouchers.
What I'd love as a prize right now is a bathroom suite LOL - It's an amazing idea for something completely strange to win - but when I saw Wickes offering one as a prize I thought that it was just what we need!
Although I can see not everyone might be stuck with an avocado bathroom suite that they're planning on changing very soon so it might not be the prize for everyone.

If there's a big competition with lots of chances to win prizes I think that's best. That way it'll encourage lots of smaller affiliates rather than those who have rather interesting web-techniques.

If a merchant gave away 100 prizes then it'd mean more people are likely to put links up and take part. If there's just one big prize for most sales you can have a guess which one of a few large sites will win.

PS: Chocolate also makes good prizes.
Which reminds me of the excellent daily comp Chris ran for Hotel Chocolat last Christmas. I thought that worked really well - encouraging new links everyday.

I prefer everyone has a equal chance ( as an affiliate) I presume best for merchant is 1 sale - 1 ticket.

As an affiliate I always think these promotions favour PPC affiliate and or cashback.

Just my POV

Re: Which Prize Would You Prefer?

Simple personal incentives drive me, I am working towards an incentive a merchant gave me, the prize is not insignificant but a lot less in value to the options above. However as i want it so much I am working double hard for this merchant.

Also Chris Bishop offered me a pint and packet of crisps and this spurred me to not promote HoF I jest, even this spur on got me trying hard to promote them.

Some of the big incentives i Just think i will never win so I don't even both putting extra effort in.

(Sorry to hijack the thread Paul) I've a quick question... Do affiliates like to win products as prizes? For example we give away loads of gifts at Christmas - from football tables through to Ferrari Racing Days. We tend to do this for 2 reasons...

1) If a Football Table has a retail value of £500, then the actual cost price to us is approx £350 (figures are made up)
2) We can often get suppliers to contribute to the cost of product - and thus reduce the cost for ourselves.

Do affiliates see this as a decent promotion and thus encourage you to put more into promoting our products or are we wasting our time? Do we simply need to give away good hard dosh?

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts...

Zak.
I like winning tangible things, as cash just goes in the bank and taxman and bills take it.
If it is a prize I really want would always go for the tangible

So Zak if you having trouble getting rid of prizes I am always up for the winning, I am sure Ray or Frosty will let me have a turn once in a while

Re: Which Prize Would You Prefer?

Zak,

Personally I do see it as a decent promotion and the ones you have offered past, present & future have been & will continue to be. In your case they are usually associated with products you offer, with some other merchants this is not really feasible i.e. a financial service company offering free pet insurance for a year when all you have is a goldfish.

Generally prizes and incentives I guess need to have a bit of variation & imagination rather than predictability. If offering "tangible" goods if that is the correct word then maybe several different prize options are required.

It is horses for courses but for you personally Zak this could be quite good

Prezzybox.com: Mightymast Retro Arcade Machine £1,295.00

I have noticed with your comps in the past that you do offer good variation, whilst some others offer the standard MP3 Players & IPods in surplus (maybe even surplus to requirements). Granted beggars can't be choosers, but a little thought into what affiliates may not have may be the catalyst required to spur action (as in promote further) whether it be a hospitality day to an event, a holiday, electrical products or cash lump sum. Has anyone won a car yet?

With cash lump sums how many zero's will float an affiliates boat and invigorate them? For me personally £50 & £100 doesn't do it for me or cut the mustard. £500 I may take a cursory glance, anything with three zeros or more, time permitting, I 'll more likely assess to would I have a chance. But we musn't forget what is realistically affordable for the merchant.

The manner of the competition is also important, personal preference goes to 1 sale = 1 ticket.

The style of the competition too may help. Some merchants have football or F1 league tables where there is week to week results. Sunshine.co.uk were proactive in actual participation on a regularly basis with varied ideas keeping the promotion alive & interesting with regular updates, rather than just announcing & then quickly forgotten. In your face but in a good way. Could the Maldives be next?

We see a lot of activity days circulating around, whilst for me Buyagift reign supreme for obvious reasons, think about the others that offer these too. Affiliates are based in different parts of the country, what doesn't get factored in are travelling & accommodation expenses incurred by an affiliate in attending these sometimes equates or exceeds the value of the activity itself.

At the end of the day, beggars can't be choosers & perhaps we should be appreciative of any promotion / incentive (except for biggest earner takes all). But we are in a multi million pound industry now. To get the creative & marketing juices of the affiliates flowing, they (merchant, agencies, networks) perhaps need to conjure up imaginative prizes as well as constantly prompted or keeping affiliates aware by engaging & regular updates.

That's why I look forward to hopefully seeing a dedicated section soon, so that opportunities don't pass affiliates by because they were not aware or need reminding since they were busy & may had forgotten first time around or simply didn't notice.

Re: Which Prize Would You Prefer?

Interesting thread and I'd say the 2 x £2500 cash prize appeals to me most.

However, a well known affiliate guru, did say to me once that top affiliates are rather rich (are you guys??) - and what they prefer is to be provided with an incentive which shows the merchant has really had a think about how to reward the affiliate.

Me - I am easy - cash will do - thank you very much
