Tracking URLs - length limit?
I'm just setting up some detailed tracking for a project I'm working on, where I want to pass various bits of info as a tracking reference with my links, so when looking at sales I can see things like whether they came from an AdWords campaign and if so which campaign, whether they came from a link on another site, etc, along with some other info.
I've got a question, though, which I hoped somebody might be able to help with before I get too far into this - do the networks that allow tracking IDs have any limits on the length of the tracking IDs you pass?
I'm not expecting huge tracking strings, but they could easily be 30 or 40 characters long - is that likely to be a problem? While some might be able to accept that, are there any that won't?
There are ways around it, by including less info in the tracking URL, abbreviating it more, etc - but I don't want to do that if they will take longer tracking ids.
Or as another idea, which really might push it a bit, is to include the referring url of the site the user followed to get to my site. E.g. if a site has a link to me that the user follows I could record that in a cookie then a few pages (or days) on when they follow a link to a merchant I could include that referring URL in the tracking ID. Referring URLs could be quite long, though.
So basically - are there any limits (either imposed or technical) to the length of the tracking ID I can send to specific networks?
