  Question Which comes first?

Hi, thinking about dipping my big toe into affiliate marketing. Have the website skills and some marketing experience.

Have an idea for a site that I think would work well and there are a number of merchants it would suit but before I put the effort into building out the site I was wondering should I apply to the networks first and get approved or should I build the site and then apply for approval?

Hey

If it's a quality site, you shouldn't have any issue at all being accepted - having said that you're more likely to be accepted if the site's in place already. I tend to build sites with regular links/content, then apply to the merchants afterwards, but it's up to you.

Either way, a quick phonecall should sort it if you're rejected before the site's built!

I would say build the site first, its easier to approve an application with a site there to look at. even if the site isnt fully finished, at least the networks and merchants can get an idea of where you are coming from and what you want to acheive.

I'd agree with building the site first if possible - sometimes it isn't always!

If you need to chat to anyone at LinkShare I'll be happy to help.

For better quality merchants it is true a site in place is required but you will be able to populate your site with less fussy approvals, just to get it up and for you to become a member of the appropriate affiliate networks..

  Re: Which comes first?

Many thanks for the replies.

Fits with what I was thinking, I don't want to expend a huge amount of effort or cash on something until I see the potential for a decent return. will have to figure out a reasonable balance, enough to get up and running but not bankrupting me

Presumably high traffic with a decent percent of returning vistors is what I am aiming for and "encouraging" them to actually click through and complete.
