Can anyone clarify what deeplinking is? My understanding is that you can use the hyperlink given by the affiliate scheme but use your own text i.e. in an article or some content. Am I on the right track or completely wrong?

Usually we use affiliate URLs which take us to the retailer home page. However, if you want to promote a certain product and affiliate network can provide you with such a URL that takes you directly to that retailer URL and not its home page then its called Deeplinking.
You're quite right. I use it quite a bit and it can be time consuming when you have to filter through the whole deep link feed but once it's done you just insert the image link and the product URL which should have your af ID included and Bob's your uncle. You then have the exact products relevant to your sites content. You then just have to make up some good selling content along with a call to action.
Hope this helps

Deep linking can also be useful for finance programmes if the landing page to the merchant site doesn't show the application form and the customer needs to click a few times to find it.
By deep linking directly to the application form this takes away those extra few clicks and time taken to find the form and can lead to improved conversions.
But you do need to be careful that the customer still knows what it is they are applying for if the application form doesn't contain much info on the product. In this instance the site driving the lead should contain enough information before giving the customer the opportunity to apply.

Deeplinking takes awhile if you want to link to a large number of items but once done it definately helps with conversions. I have no links going to merchant home pages on my sites but always explain that the customer is buying through a seperate retailer.
