    Hi,

Got a real odd one, well for me anyway im used to getting into the index fast!

I uploaded my site on the 1st October, got a few links and by the end of the day Google had crawled me.

Next day my homepage was listed and was even on page 4 on a fairly highly competitive keyword. Waited a few days, nothing.

This morning, approx 4 days since the launch date the home page has vanished off Google, cache is still there and when i use site:domainname.com it actually shows one of the pages within my site that was never listed before. But only one when the site is probably about 30 pages in total.

I had a look at different datacenters and all showing the same results.

Odd thing was I traced 3 hits last night from people searching for the keyword that im aiming for (the one i was on page 4 for)? So the site must have ranked fairly high for a short period last night, perhaps second page etc to get those hits?.... Esp at nightime?...

Does Google "test" sites to see what feedback they will get? That might explain the hits? If so what happens now? Will i get back into the listings eventually?

Im very confused, iv got about 30 links into the site so far. All are pretty decent, no spam etc etc....... Iv actually been VERY carefull and odopted the whole quality original content, quality links and stuff with this site. Im trying to make it whiter than white....... So i dont think it could be a ban because, well iv done nothing wrong.... eeek!

Anyone seen this? Im all out of ideas! Is it a sign my quality content and links etc are going to work wonders or is the news not so great? Perhaps im making my way over the sandbox.... eee i dunno.

    ----------------

Also the page Google has indexed is actually in 2 place for the keyword its aimed at? This is not as hard a keyword as the original one to hit but it should be way beyond what a new site should be doing? More confussion!

Fairy common, when Google indexes new pages from new sites they can be given a golden handshake and listed quite high, this usually only lasts a short time and then they either vanish or drop like a bomb. Be carefull you don't go too fast with the link buliding or you will be at the bottom of the pile for the next 6-12 months if you end up in the so called sandbox.

Make sure you submit a sitemap and update it regulary and within a few weeks you should find most of your pages in the index.

This is fairly common, when google ranks a new site it goes in high for the first week or two, and then drops down the rankings like a stone, and then bounces back up to its near final position.

I`m not sure why it happens, but it mostly does and seems to be part of their indexing procedure.

If you have a really good SEO'd site though, you can sometimes stay in the initial high position you went in at. I`ve had several sites go straight to number 1 and stay there permanently.

The "sandbox" doesn't exist as such, in that new domains don't just go into area which never appears in the top search results, and your stuck there for 6 months or so as is commonly mentioned on the net.

Usually what happens is that the new site falls because of its content and not being optimised. Over time, content is added, back links built up etc and it rises up the rankings. In my opinion this is what gives rise to the "sandbox" effect that people speak of, when in fact its a normal part of being indexed.

Thanks for the heads up guys.

It funny my site has appeared again but much higher up the rankings than it was ha ha!

The site is heavily optimized in terms of amount of content, keyword desity and meta tags etc. Iv tried not to go over board though and iv spread the content around the site and added other themes such as directions, disability access, etc tec.

Anyway im higher up the rankings now so well have to see what happens next :tup

This has happened to me quite a few times in the past as well.

The good news is that once its gone down and then bounced back up, in my experience that's the position it stays at. For the next couple of days it will usually appear in high and low positions randomly, as the new position propagates round the various data centres.

Is there any time when this doesn't happen when a new site is launched
I think this is fairly standard practice with Google

Yeah I think it is totally possible that your site appears in google at the top every now and again. Mine did in the past. Don't know why it does though. Often a matter of just being patient. I

I have just as strange things going on too. For example every now and again I suddenly I get several hits from the term "Skoda touch in paint" even though my site is to do with televisions. What's that about?

Also, if I type in my URL into google sometimes I not only get a list of all the sites that link to me but also the homepages of Comet and Dixons and I'm pretty sure they don't have me listed on their site, although it would be nice if they did

Yes, several of my later sites did not exhibit this behaviour, and went straight to the top and stayed there.

I`m not sure exactly what stopped it from happening, as when I launched the sites they were optimised for SEO as much as they could be. Overall it stopped the position bouncing, but from all the techniques I applied i`m not sure which one was most responsible.

My advice would be that if you are launching a new site, make sure you optimise it as much as you can before it goes live, don't launch it and then plan to do it afterwards.
