How about Adsense ?
Whilst continuing to look for new ways of monetising one of my sites I thought about selling ad space.
Who on here has experience of this and do they have any tips.
Can anyone suggest any websites I could use for this. like adsbay.co.uk
The site ranks #1 on google for the term car maintenance.
I have tried numerous different programs in this banner space (top right, cross site) but they never convert very well.
So hence the idea of selling the space, but that raises loads of questions ;
charge monthly / quarterly etc. - how much to charge ? - contracts etc.
So I am doing the research first (makes a change) before jumping straight in.
All comments VERY welcome,
thanks in advance.

Already using adsense, doing ok (getting better).
It's the space at the topright ( Car Basics - car care, car knowledge and maintenance, car articles ).
Cheers for the PM and other suggestions.
Hi Renamecor
I've another suggestion for monetising your site (or at least one page of it).
On your 'How to fix a chipped windscreen' page, at the time of writing, you have embedded the Autoglass® TV ad.
Autoglass is a well-known brand (one of the UK public's "Top 500 Superbrands") and the Autoglass® branding is all over the TV ad.
However instead of capitalising on this and referring customers to Autoglass® for a windscreen repair (which is usually free for most people with fully comp insurance and does not affect your no-claims bonus) you are encouraging your visitors to buy a DIY kit and try to repair a chip themselves.
Visitors may well come to your page and after viewing the TV ad decide that they would prefer to let Autoglass® do an expert job of repairing their windscreen in just 30 minutes rather than order a DIY kit, wait it for to be delivered and then have a go themselves.
If they decide to go down the expert route then you are potentially missing a sale by not linking to us - so why not join the Autoglass® affiliate scheme?

Firstly - what a brilliant site - I get in my automatic car, start it up and go - haven't got a clue how to fix anything - or even how it works, and if I ever had to then your site would be a godsend - so well done you :tup (sorry if that sounds patronising)
It reminds me though of how Allkids used to be - loads of content and good advice, a few banners and adsense, but it made a bob or two - I even sold the top banner space a few times for quite a nice sum - but it wasn't untill I started optimising every page on the site, and all the spaces on the page that it really took off.
If you're interested in my thoughts/ideas, send me a PM and we'll have a chat.
ps - you haven't finished 'how to fill your windscreen wipers' - I'd find that helpful (could ask Dave I suppose, but he does get patronising)

I've found with having a niche (ish) site, that its quite difficult to get commissions of any significance when you're trying to capitalise on a link which is not actually what visitors have in mind and not what they are actually visiting for.
So for instance, we've got a motorsport site, but have never managed to sell a single insurance policy through aff. links for a normal road going car. Similarly outdoor clothing - no good at all in terms of any significant commission for the amount of work.
Lots of free brand space for the merchants though :-(
So I think a key thing is to really look at the metrics, to see whether the figures would stack up if it worked.
If they are fixing a brake problem, you could sell trolley jacks through an aff link, but how many people will actually need a trolley jack at that time ? The end result of micro-assessing all the options and installing what look like fairly relevant links could just be a waste of time.
I know that sounds negative, but if you've got a site with plenty of visitors, then the brand advertising has got to be worth more than aff. links, if you get the right retailer. For example one that is launching a new Sat Nav and will commit to say 3 or 6 months.
The merchants are used to paying plenty for exposure - we don't have to deal with them as affiliates, just because they have a program. Plus there are some that don't have affiliate schemes, so you can use some leverage... "we were thinking of putting in links here, because xyz company have an affiliate scheme. You don't and that makes life more difficult, but if you were to offer enough, we could give you that dedicated space ".
(why not go to an Autoglass competitor and use that argument)
... awaits flaming for being b.....y cheeky ;-)
I imagine filling the site with adsense could generate reasonable money, but test whether it can target properly first, otherwise it just looks daft (speaking from bitter experience here !).
Elaine, I have PM'd you.
Aotagain, thanks for the comments about the metrics, I fully understand what you mean and think this is where I am with this site. Chasing one's tail to find products in programs only to find .... etc. , have lost alot of time on that path.
Definitely with the banner / exposure method.
Any other comments rgeatly received.
Carl.
