Sing up to google webmaster tools for your site. Links will take a while to show up in webmaster tools but can normally be seen within a week or so depending on how quickly google indexes them.

When you say, how long is it before links start to appear .. what do you mean? Links will only 'appear' if another website owner adds them to their site.

You can try Link Popularity Check - Marketleap Search Engine Marketing Tools for links and keyword verification too.

SmartPageRank | Backlink PageRank Check is quite useful too as it also gives the PR of the link page. Can't guarantee it's accuracy though.
