Wonder how many internet orders are returned and how many bought extra today online?

Certainly they got hammered in the stores.

M&S sale scam: Shoppers return Christmas gifts then buy the same thing... with 20% off | Mail Online

Marks& Spencer today fell victim to thousands of shrewd shoppers who returned Christmas presents only to buy them back at sale price.

The canny customers swarmed the refund desks in M&S stores across Britain to make the most of its 20 per cent discount day by using the nifty trick.

Hardly "poor m&s" they are not a charity, and they are not selling at a loss by knocking 20% off.

With the "recession" splashed all over the TV and newspapers, it is no wonder that joe public is trying to save money in any areas they can.

This should have been expected, and if the marketing guys at M&S were any good, it would have been expected to some degree.

I can see this trend happening with other shops that slash the price of their good just before xmas.

Timing is critical in this game :tup

If Marks and Spencers lose money (which they have done - accounted for sales returned at a far higher ratio equals a balance sheet loss) it affects jobs, production, unemployment and therefore deepens the recession.

The error was to allow returns on that day.

I think people are inherently selfish and short sighted when it comes to saving money. Recessions can only be short-lived if people spend money and companies are profitable.

I'm neither selfish nor short sighted but I have got good financial sense, I'm returning £267 worth of goods on Saturday that I managed to buy at 20% less yesterday and I'll have an extra £53 to spend elsewhere.

    Poor M&S, £1.1bn profit, hardly!

The error you have pointed out would have made no difference. Shoppers would have just bought the extra items in the sale, and just returned the full price items on a different day. It would make no difference if they made it a "no returns today" policy.

So are you saying that you think about the actual companies well being when you spend your money ? do you only shop in places that do not offer sales ? I doubt this very much.

Of course people are selfish with money, the same as shops have always been selfish. Do you honestly beleive that by offering "20% off" is to help customers ? I think you have very strange ideas of business if you really think this.

All imo of course mate and not meant personal in anyway

Errrm, it doesn't work that way around - you will only get back the price you paid - so you could get your £267 back but you won't get an extra 20%.
Never argue with idiots. They just drag you down to their level and then beat you with their experience.

LOL, funniest thing I've read all day.
Good to see that your faith in capitalism is unshaken.

I'm off to spend all my rainy-day money - that'll sort out this pesky recession.

Keith, I think he meant to say that he re purchased the goods again yesterday, and will return the goods previously purchased at the higher price!

Yeah what about all that profit these companies make ?
...and those water companies making the headlines with millions in profit as well.

Getting OUR money and doing what with it ?

They should all run at break even and give the profits back shouldn't they.

Then when we get the next flood, or the equipment in a power station needs £20mln to keep it going, they could just come to us and say - could you all put some of your money in a pot, because otherwise you'll have no leccy.... and we'll all say yes of course.

And that government, they're taking our money as well and doing what with it ?
Hiding it I reckon. Either that or wasting it on projects that keep people employed.

Yes THEY have got OUR money.

Paranoia rules OK and just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you ;-)
