The DPA advised me that unless I hold personal details which are identifiable to an individual by name, then I do not need to register.
I explained that I collect the user's name and email address and the chap on the end of the phone said I wouldn't need to register UNLESS I began collecting things like their average earnings per year, etc.
I will, however, ring and check with them soon, as the volume of data I'm starting to collect is becoming rather big......and maybe things have changed since I last studied this?
Looks like i got some reading to do then.
We've just renewed ours and the feeling we got from the DPA was that name/email collation wasn't a problem and we wouldn't need to be registered...
However, given that people online tend to be jumpy about their details, and that the DPA didn't really seem to understand, and that it costs something like £35 a year... we played safe and re-registered.
Jason
looks better in your privacy policies if you say "We're registered with the Data Protection Registrar, Registration Number #XXXXX"
and £35 isnt that much.
