Actually, that reads to me as quite insulting. An affiliate's URL is protected and a private note is recommended, but merchants' URLs are to be publically displayed and the operators are not to be advised? I understood that affiliates and merchants worked togther but that comments suggests a worrying divide to me.[/quote]

Dean, IMO all that meant was that some of the affiliates here like to keep their websites out of the attention of everyone that reads the forum so to post URLs would reveal those and would in fact be against the forum rules

Obviously the merchants on here aren't bothered about keeping their website quiet so people could post those URL's on the forum.

The original message was to make everyone aware but just the methods of informing other affiliates could be more discreet.

I don't think it was meant to be insulting at all

Bertm is correct, by being a merchant and listing your site on the networks, you are saying to the world. “Yes please tell everyone about my site”.

Some of the affiliates here don't want others to know what they do because the fear copying (I don't have time to worry about that because I know everyone knows what my sites are, you don't rank in the top 10 for your terms, if you want to hide your sites).

Anyway wasn't anything against merchants, it's simply as a group we care if people are being taken a way visitors from the merchants we promote. I some how think people wouldn’t care so much if a small individual affiliate was losing some visitors, shame but true.

I posted the link mentioned in the first post here on another forum I frequent, and the siteadmin whipped up a stand-alone version of the gator checker script if anyone wishes to check their sites for gator invasion.

You can get it from this thread

I notice that searchscout is paying to deliver popunder results through GATOR on many targetted sites.

    The results are Espotting results.

I know Espotting are quite strict about popups of their results to 'keep traffic quality high'.

How come they allow Searchscout to 'spam' their results through Gator?

Do Espotting actually know about this and allow it?

As an Espotting advertiser I'm not too happy about my ads being displayed via Gator like this.

    Searchscout is owned by Gator.

When you say 'they' do you mean Espotting?

Did your email contain obscene language? (Or was it just the word 'gator' that did it!)

I may be missing a trick, but I think this gives results that are over 1 year old.

I got infected by an internet worm recently.. one symptom that I thought was damn cunning (tho obviously quite frustrating ;p ) was that it edited my hosts file to redirect mcafee.com and symatec.com to 127.0.0.1

Now, I'm not suggesting anyone starts writing virii to combat it but if gator is 'effectively blocking access to our sites', how hard or more importantly how unethical would it be for us to create an activex control or something that does nothing but change the hosts file block access to gator's ad servers?

use the same tactics - popup on high traffic sites, user just hits yes to get rid of it.. suddenly gator can't pop up any more ads or send any more info home... would it be wrong to stoop to their level and 'trick' users into downloading things or would it be fair play given the circumstances?
