"I think it's just said on the news that advertisers are withdrawing from facebook etc cos they're promoting the British national party." Well once a militent organisation get in there, they will cause havoc for sure.

School remember is not a substitute nanny or baby sitter, its there to provide an education. What is lacking is places for kids to go outside of school, there is not a lot for them to do except hang about and roam around the area or go to mates houses. I agree with Kier on every point as always. Teaching kids right from wrong does start in the early years and has to be reinforced over and over again and that actions have consequences. Some one said in this thread that parents just pass down what their experiences have been, maybe there is something in that?

You can have deaf and blind kids around those with sight all day and they will never stop being deaf and blind. The best way to learn a language is through immersion so teaching these kids separately would be a really bad move. As I understand it schools do get extra funding to deal with these issues anyway, plus immigrants make a net contribution to the economy so I'm not sure precisely what the problem is?

I didn't say segregate! For the process to work it needs more money and the support of parents - especially the mums who are often also not speaking english.
My friend who teaches says there isn't the right amount of money or resources available in her school.

Why can't they stay at home and do things like reading, painting, playing games with their family?
Is there something wrong with going to a friends house?

Children roaming the streets in a feral way isn't good for anyone.

Naturally, I think most teachers say that though, I don't think its particuarly connected to immigration in any obvious way. I went to a school with loads of different nationalities and I turned out ok

One of the best schools in the UK is a primary school in inner-city london where deaf kids and hearing kids integrate together all day, its so cool and so great and so works!
They also have a percentage of kids learning English, they have kids with learning difficulties and all the challenges that most if not all schools have. It works so well, and yeah they could do with more resources and more money. But what makes them so great is that the parents all most are the additional support teachers. The school encourages parents to come in and take part.
Yup funding is given for each classroom assistant that is required.
Ok Mogs, so... how would it work in your utopian world, what is the solution?

I don't have a solution. Parent's can't (yet) be forced to take part actively in schools - which is perhaps why the one you're talking about does well - because it is supported well by parents. And would you want parents who didn't want to be helping there doing stuff?
how many teaching assistants per class and how big are the classes?

In an ideal world there'd be no problem funding the additional resources.
