Firstly, let me apologise for the delays you have experienced and the response you received to your original ticket - it is definitely not acceptable.
This morning our primary image server went offline. We hadn't expect this to affect users in any way, unfortunately our caching didn't handle the load as well as we'd thought and so some sites were much slower than normal. However, this is now back online and images should be processing at normal speed.
We are also in the process of significantly expanding capacity in this area to improve image delivery performance. This upgrade is of high priority but will take some time to implement.
