  IP address for awin1.com?

Does anyone know the IP address of awin1.com

(This is for a temporary workaround to the recent problems with this domain).

Thanks,
Darren.

Hi,

Please dont use the IP addresses in any links, they will not earn commission or work properly. They are also subject to change.

Hi Marc,

That's a big shame, as I've now got the temporary workaround working.

Is there any way that ip addresses could be made to "count" as conversions?

(I suspect not, but it's worth asking!)

If I switch over to the IP address, the following happens:

1) Our banner images reappear (it was looking very bad!)
2) Visitors to the site are no longer put off by broken links.
3) Merchants still get traffic from my site, and still get SALES (will I get a reward for being so nice, I wonder?

But:

4) When the awin1.com address propagates fully, I will still be losing out on commissions that I would start to get if I left awin1.com in.

How long does this propagation normally take?

If it is several days, then I may as well switch over to the ip address, get no commissions, but merchants still get free traffic - how public spirited of me!

Wonder no more.. no you won't get squawk as the cookie works on the domain and the merchants call the domain to check the sale in against the cookie and as the domain is dead, no check is done.

> 4) When the awin1.com address propagates fully, I will still be losing out on commissions that I would start to get if I left awin1.com in.

Yes using the IP is a waste of time unless everyone was using it again the cookie is at domain level so need to be a match for the domain, you can get cookies on IP's aslo but I am pretty sure (this is where I show I am not the tech in the company) that the call back would need to call the IP also for it to read.

> How long does this propagation normally take?

24 to 72 hours.. as it was already a live domain before it was put on hold I am opting for 24 hours... if it was brand new domain I be going for 72 hours.

If it was a .co.uk it happened on then it would be working again around 6am to 9am the following day unless your the super powerful eBay, then you can call in special favours and get Nominet to reload the zone file.. something they would normally only do for themselves or the government other wise everyone else has to wait until the next day.

Thanks Supercod, this is all very useful information!

Do you know when the awin1.com domain was reapplied for (as in approximately what time?)

I think I will compromise with my main site - I will use the IP address to display the images, but the domain for the links - this means that the site "looks" OK (i.e. no broken images), but the click-thrus will fail - but at least they will start working again once the propagation has completed (perhaps even tomorrow if we're lucky - fingers-crossed).

This "mistake" really does take the biscuit - and I know I've made some mistakes since getting involved in being an affiliate (loading my testbed robots.txt file that disallows all robots onto my main site by accident is probably the worst!)

Mistakes happen and they are dealing with it. Right not great but AW didn't do this deliberate. My first thoughts this morning was for my own pocket with my affiliate links not working (as I imagine most people would have) but really not the end of the world, it been dealt with and it will come back online.

I own a small domain name company and I know just how many people want to renew yet because of all the spam, and scams that come in to renew your domain name with this, that and the other they end up (2 years after they last bought from you) thinking your the same. Imagine how hard it is for people in accounts to workout what is real and what is a scam. Anyway it not an excuse on there part I am just saying it happens to loads and loads of people, I see it monthly.

I very much sympathise - this is probably hitting AW very hard - a lot harder than little old me!

Zero revenue for 24 to 72 hours unexpectedly is bad for any business.

Ebay never renewed it's .co.uk domain name last year... imagine how much money they would have lost in 24 hours. Instead they where offline for a few hours as they pulled in favours.

Even Microsoft forgot to renew Hotmail.com.. one of the customers who wanted his email paid the renewal for them.. mind you he got $200,000 as a thank you from them after doing that good deed LOL

  Nearly.....

It nearly happened to me on my first domain registered, but not first renewal, luckily the fairies at the bottom of my garden warned me and I just did it in time.

In other words, if I hadn't had a feeling I should check the renewal date - it would have been gone - shows we put too much faith in other peoples work ethic, sometimes.

Just checked and awin1 links are working again, don't know about stats, etc.
