Yaa I feel option one is better.. for you.
I'm changing the domain of one of my sites so that I can put a larger product line on it.
Basically, the homepage of the original site has now become a page for that range, rather than the new site's homepage.
The website doesn't have an amazing amount of rank (only PR2 as it's new), but I can't decide if I should
A: Forward the homepage of the old site, to the homepage of the new site
http://www.a.com >>> http://www.b.com
B: Forward the homepage of the old site, to the section covering that product on the new website
http://www.a.com >>> http://www.b.com/product
I'm posting to see if people have thoughts on this, and which one would be best for my rankings.
I realise the homepage usually has the highest rank, so I wouldn't want to loose it by not doing option A, but with option B could the rank work its way back and stay?

yes in this case option 1 would be fine

301 from the old homepage to the new homepage would be the best thing to do with clear links to the new section (old content) so that anyone looking for the original content (say through a bookmark) will find it easily.

I ended up 301ing to the new section, rather than new homepage. Seems to have worked fine
The homepage is listed for it's main key term now so all is good!
