Is there any free tool from the internet that can help analyze a website? I want to learn more about how backlinking works and how websites get most of their traffic. I don't have to see the sites, just the percentage of backlinks from social media, blog sites, etc.

Free Backlink Checker is pretty good: Free Backlink Checker, Free Link Check Tool

Yahoo Site Explorer is a decent free tool: Site Explorer - Yahoo! Site Explorer

LinkPopularity.com is not too bad: LinkPopularity.com: The Free Link Popularity Service

They don't have the insight you are looking for, though, such as the percentage of backlinks from different categories of websites etc.

I use piwik (www.piwik.org). Unlike google analytics, the results are in real time. Also, I use SEO - Search Engine Optimization | Tools & Software to Rank Better and Website SEO Tool | Website Grader regularly.

One of the best has got to be google analytics

Although there are a variety of additional tools such as the seomoz options, which are also very good.

For backlinks, siteexplorer, seems to the best option
Blog and Social Media Management service as well as Professional article writing and submission service offering
80 UK based one way anchor text backlinks and 100 anchor text backlinks

There is of course always that nagging feeling at the back of your mind that Google is already so deeply ingrained in all we do.

This massive amount of incredibly granular data on so many millions of websites just adds to that nagging...

Useful info. I would liike to know if there is any comprehensive ebook or guide for Google Analytics because although it appears to do everything you need; it sure takes a degree to understand how to use it; any help greatfully received.

The tool that I use to analyze the backlinks is Yahoo link domain. Other than this there are several tools, but I feel this is good and faster compared to others. There is one more tool, which I use rarely, that is backlinkwatch.com
