This is actually a very good point which ties back to another one: if you are working in the retail vertical, work with merchants that keep their data feeds updated.

Although this sounds like a good idea, it can actually go against you.

Just read a very interesting book about the psychology of selling, and this topic came up. A lot of companies found that when they added in more choices for the customer, the sales actually went down rather up.

The explanation behind it is that the customers get bogged down trying to decide what to buy from all the different choices available, and in the end give up and end up buying nothing, as they can't make up their mind.

Although 3 choices are better than 1 for example, having a large number of choices can actually go against you, so stick to a few different options and no more.

^^ yeah I thought the same. One of the things affiliate sites bring to the table is guidance to make decisions. Anyone could go straight to the merchant site but if they dont know what to buy they will start searching for sites that can cut through the babble and help them make that choice.

I would also agree with trying to go very long tail with your sites, then on the page try and keep the number of options down as much as possible, as too many options will bamboozle the visitor and they may decide to not buy and keep looking.

RED Button do work.......for some people

Compare cheap car hire prices from over 50 companies on Car Rentals UK - now what colour button do you see??? Depends who you are

Split test and multi test everything and anything.........there is not one solution, every person is unique and every page they see should be unique and tuned for them

Some people like to be told ****ing click here

    I can see your point.

But that approach depends on the products/service you sell , and doesnt relate to all retail products in general.
Its more likely to relate to loans, car finance etc.

We dont give people many choices.......we take 100 people and profile each one...then it depends on what type you are as to what route we take you down.

What colour button do you see?

Compare cheap car hire prices from over 50 companies on Car Rentals UK

RED - means we profile you as lower than average intelligence
GREEN - means we profile you as higher that average intelligence

Go on dare you to take the test and pot the results
