    Hi

I am thinking of acquiring a .cn domain and hosting it in China. The domain shall be the property of my UK Ltd Company.

Are there any specific legislative requirements I must have? It's as an affiliate of a merchant which trades with China and has a complete Chinese language site.

This is a bit of a long shot, but a while ago, I think it was on the Money Programme, there was a company called PCH International, run by an Irish guy, who specialise in arranging Chinese manufacturing. The guy in charge has been out in China for 10 years. Although it could be a long shot, they do have a contact e-mail on their website and they might be able to offer some words of advice about China.

    I'll give it a shot.

They deregulated to an extent over in China opening an alternative domain suffix and now .cn domains. You can obtain them via 123-reg although I note the likes of Godaddy don't have registry permissions for those domains.

Just need to ensure as much compliance as possible, particularly as they frown on outbound links to unapproved sites, so there'll be no listings from the site to non Chinese sites.

If you get too stuck I have a contact who has a server in Taiwan which he uses for Chinese language sites. I am sure he would be happy to have one more site hosted there to help with the costs. Else, as he is Chinese, he could help you to find a server in mainland China (which he could manage for you, if necessary).

Yes it'd have to be a mainland China one. Taken a look at a few so I'll contact you soon.

Got one of those throw away sort of domains, the type you develop but never really do anything with. Then I checked the stats on it the other day and saw loads of transactions and commissions so sort of thought on expanding into other language options.

    HI John,

    I hope you are well,

I don't know if this helps you out but you could try registering the domain name with Global Domain Name Registrations, Virtual Hosting, Country Specific Domain Names - Safenames.net. They allow you to regsiter most domains without you having to be based in that country itself.

    Thanks

Many thanks for that. I'll check it out. However what I specifically need information on is publisher sites (affiliates) based outside China, using a .cn to advertise retailers....in this specific case, a retailer with a .com.cn in the financial sector.

So financial services publisher guidelines for China.
UK Ltd company publishing for a third party in China.
The third party being middle east based.

My info on this is about 3 years old. At that time finding a mainland China server host that was not sitting in the USA and selling cn domains was one of the main issues. That was why the server in Taiwan was seen as the better option for the mainland China target market.

Hong Kong was also difficult to find a server host.

[Part of the spec was to have ssh access, admin/root access and access to virtualhost config files so that knocked a few hosts out of the running.]
