Well if they have bought it to use then it will make a total mockery of the Anti-Spyware Software that Microsoft is punting. However I hoping it is a case of if you can't beat them, buy them, own the patents and then shut it down and attack everyone else that's using similar technology on the ground of patent laws and not privacy laws as they don’t work.
Guess we need to wait see what happens, and I don't hold out to much hope for the buy and shut it down theory has not got any great commercial grounds and at the end of the day the only thing that counts in MS land is money.

Could simply be that MS wants to buy them simply to gain access to the core technology - dont forget that Autoroute used to be a UK company before MS bought them just to gain their mapping technology

I thought it would be a core tech/patent purchase until I stumbled on the fact that the latest version of MS Anti-Spyware apparantly detects more Claria products than before, but now recommends the use ignore them rather than remove them
this blog post links to some good comments on the issue including Ben Edelman's post where he lists some possible reasons that MS might buy Claria, including patents & Claria's 120Tb(!) database.
