  Angry un-installing AOL software

Yep I made the school boy error of installing aol on a new laptop a few months ago, was essentially a temporary measure to get online.

Now after cancelling my account seems anything I do wont clear AOL from the machine!

I,ve tried the add/remove procedure and taken out a few elements of AOL but when trying to remove AOL UK, it advises no versions of AOL can be found on the machine (not the case) its still there!

Any ideas

Much appreciated, Neil...

  Re: un-installing AOL software

I used some software to remove mine, now please note I cannot be 100% right here but I think I remember it was something called Windows Installer 3.1, if it was, it deletes all files belonging to the software and cleans the registry files.

You have to do some stuff with Winsock I think - AOL gives you a static IP or something.

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html might help. I seem to remember having to be talked through using command prompt by :ntl support to get rid of AOL.

I might be wrong on the winsock thing, but it rings a bell!

nope doesnt seem to have effected internet settings, just seems to leave AOL icons lying around everywhere, plus the occasional demo pops up on start up, no doubt it will interfere again at some point, I can work with it there, just frustrating you cant actually uninstall the software , tidy laptop tidy mind etc

thanks for the suggestions

  Re: un-installing AOL software

AOL is awful. I find it randomly booting on my computer, trying to connect to the internet, through my router. And I know a fair amount about computers, but short of formatting C I can't work out how to fully kill this blood sucking, memory munching vampire of an application!

Got it off my chest! lol

Try going to Start -> Run -> type "msconfig" and press enter.

See if you can find AOL in your start up applications, then disable it!

Note that you should be cautious when disabling certain applications, because some are required for the operating system in order to boot correctly!

  Re: un-installing AOL software

I did all of that and then made copies of the files I would have to replace in my OS (D Drive) copying them from my backup disc to my C drive after deleting everything connected to AOL manually.
