In advance of HMV announcing Q4 figures tomorrow, Play.com, one of the UK's most popular online retailers, is reporting outstanding growth in 2005.

Selling DVDs, Music, Video Games, Books and Gadgets, Play.com regards itself in direct competition with HMV.

The company experienced Q4 year on year growth within each product sector - Music (37%), DVDs (8%), Books: (130%), Video Games (50%). Between the period from November 2 to December 21, Play.com shipped 6.3 million items Said Play.com UK MD Stuart Rowe – a former board member of HMV: “Q4 proved to be an extremely strong end to a fantastic year for Play.com. We exceeded our set forecast for both Q4 and 2005 and cemented our place in the market as one of UK’s top suppliers of entertainment product.”

By the end of November, and in the intense run-up to Christmas, Play.com reported a surge in traffic, with a 50% growth in visitors, and in the first week of December alone, the retailer saw an increase of almost 100% in sales, peaking at 488 orders per minute.

Into January Hitwise also registered an increase online traffic to retail sites of 16% year on year with Play.com experiencing growth of 18% on average for the month of November.
