If you are not in a hurry, open a US Dollar account with your bank. See:

If you don't plan to open a Dollar account, then I think Barclays and Natwest charge somewhere between £6-£9 to put them into your UK Sterling account. It also might be worth saving them up as I believe Barclays used to charge this amount per transaction (not per cheque). Worth checking on the high street to see how much different banks charge.

bills2big.com has a little shameless behaviour in the past
  Re: 888 cheque in dollars

I am not aware of Barclays charing for US checks, it is just for US money orders.

I think LloydsTSB charge a fixed £6-£8 plus a small percentage of the transaction amount (multiple cheques = 1 transaction) as well. There was always a long form the cashier had to fill out, and I got the money in my account a few days later.

Not always true that it's cheaper. Costs me the same to put a $ cheque into my $ account as into my proper account. Not worth hanging on to them in the hope the exchange rate goes in your favour if you have tax to pay also.

I negotiated with them so I pay in as many cheques as possible for £10. Makes it worth saving up a bundle.
