I can almost see the logic, but it's not good PR.
Hopefully all those here won't fall into the category they describe!

Dear ........
At Commission Junction, our primary focus is to
facilitate strategic online relationships between
advertisers and publishers, driving accountable
results for each client. While many of our clients
far exceed their pay-for-performance goals using
our technology and services, we continually strive
to improve the effectiveness of online marketing
and increase the quality of our own service.
Accordingly, we are initiating a productive
publisher program designed to enhance the overall
quality of our publisher base by requiring
publisher commitment to improving their pay-for-
performance marketing efforts. The program is
detailed in the new Publisher Service Agreement.
For your convenience we have summarized the most
notable changes to the Agreement at the end of this
message.
When the new Publisher Service Agreement and
productive publisher program become effective on
March 28, 2003, Commission Junction will begin
assessing a monthly fee of USD $10 to publisher
accounts that have not generated any commissions
for six consecutive calendar months. The purpose of
this fee is to ensure that publishers in our network
are producing results. Publisher accounts that have
not generated any commissions for six consecutive
months and do not have a positive account balance
will be closed.
Since you have been earning commissions through the
Commission Junction network, you stand to benefit
from the productive publisher program because
advertisers will be able to focus their efforts on
their productive publishers, resulting in improved
performance. We at Commission Junction are committed
to helping publishers improve results through
pay-for-performance marketing. We appreciate your
continued participation in the network, and look
forward to working with you for a successful 2003.
Sincerely,
Jeff Pullen

No, not going to worry anyone here !!
The way I read it - if you thought about starting an affiliate scheme six months ago but never went ahead then now you start getting charged 10$ a month for the next six months after which they close the account.
So suddenly, people that probably can't even remember who CJ are, start getting bills through the door.
Wouldn't like to be on the customer services telephones at CJ !!
The joys of making corporate moves !
Aly
The way I read it, they are going to put the charge onto your account rather than bill you for it. Then after six months they just close the account.
If they are planning on actually billing this then they should be giving people the chance of closing the account if they don't want it.
Yup, makes more sense that way !

Ive got a spare account that I havent used for over a year, how'd I close it?
Well it was ages before I ever started to earn anything from CJ. I could well have had my account closed a few years ago if this had been the rules then...
Suppose there's good and bad points to it.
Cheers

Very true, my spare account was my first account which I opened something like 4 years ago.. back then they had very few if any UK merchants. I never even made enough to get a payment in 4 years lol.
Theres about $10 in there. If they had this system then I would have been kicked out and very unlikely to get back in.
Look on the bright side, most other people wont know how to make money on the net (it took me 6 months to earn anything with CJ)... so will drop the ads and close the accounts = less competition & less ads on the net LOL.
"No, not going to worry anyone here !!"
Speak for yourself! :rollin:
With $21 in 6 weeks, with 3 merchants, I reckon I'm perilously close <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/ohwell.gif ALT=":\">
I think the key thing here is active, all you had to do is make 1 sale in 6 months.. I can understand this to be a problem for brand new folk but most people should manage 1 sale... And if you can't buy something small via one of your links at least once in 6 months and you will get to stay active![]()
Well, I guess they would need to be reasonably lenient about this new idea, if they had introduced this system a few years back I doubt if anyone on this board would have an account.
Anyway I would have thought it was a good marketing thing for CJ to say to prospective merchants "hey, we've got XXX million of publishers" rather then saying "hey, we've got 20 but there all ****hot!"
I would rather have 100 ****hotthen 10,000 monkeys!
But your right, heck imagine if TD had that in place when I started with them, I joined up and never done a thing for close to 6 months, the moment I found the merchants I could work with I was making thousands per month for not only me but TD.
I discussed this with a friend today - who is dropping CJ for other reasons.
I suspect that bandwidth of badly placed banners costs a lot of money, decreases performance of merchants stats and slows the whole thing down.
In some ways it will be a good thing, but for a lot of people the learning curve is slow and some people will get dropped unfairly perhaps.
I assume it'll impact the $$$$$ rating system too, if the overall number of affiliates is reduced.
If it means there are fewer competitors I'm not sure that'll make a difference as the ones being removed are the weaker ones. Maybe some of those naff sites will be got rid of (You know the ones with 6-7 banner ads on a page and then 4 popups).
On the other hand we should be asking perhaps that CJ supports new affiliates - you never know when they might decide they only want the affiliates who earn over 10k a month.
Maybe we should offer them a buddy system? So that good affils can adopt a new one? (Although we might want the 5% forever bounty reintroduced for that)
A company we know registered us as an referred affiliate, they had been inactive for over 6 months, their account was closed without notification and they lost their 5% over ride, they are quering this with CJ which has taken too long and looking at alternative ways to claim their entitlement.
