I also don't use the image code on some of my links and it seems to work ok, it does through some of the stats out ofcourse. I also wonder if the image code sets a cookie even if the visitor doesn't click on the link.

Quick question for the CJ experts here...
I use a fair amount of text links with CJ and am curious to know if the 1x1 pixel SRC image that's part of the code is a requirement. I have a few text links without a 1x1 image, and the tracking appears to work - is it optional?

Links should work fine without the image tag.
It can only set a cookie if the vistor goes to the site (the domain that the cookie is set) so you cant set a cookie from a third party domain loading an image.
Is it not just used to ensure your impressions are correct?
They do use it for that. I was recently contacted by Barclaycard because they wanted to know about my linking methods. Too many clicks with no image impressions.
CJ should dump it altogether, but as someone else mentioned recently they don't seem to be keeping up with software development any more.
