Thread: CJ Action Referral Occurrences!

Did you know that on most CJ merchants your cookie expires after the first order placed? ie. You refer a customer and say a 45 day cookie is placed. If they then return and place an order the cookie is removed so you get no further commission on subsequent orders even if within the 45 day cookie period.

The current offer from Argos of a £10 voucher for every order over £100 encourages customers with a big multiple order to place lots of smaller individual orders to collect a £10 voucher for each. Us poor old affiliates will only get commission on the first order placed!

See the merchant information page - most have it set to '1 time'.

Excerpt from CJ Help:

"Action Referral Occurrences: This is the number of times an advertiser will pay a commission to you for the same cookie during its referral period. For example, when a "web surfer" is referred by you to an advertiser's site, the tracking cookie is set and let's assume the referral period is 45 days. If the web visitor makes several unique visits and unique purchases over the next 45 days, the advertiser can opt to pay a commission to you for each one or set number of those visits and purchases."

Not good!

If it's the way your saying it then it's not good, however maybe you’re reading too much into it!

As the way I read it is if the program is for say £10 for new customer to a site and the cookie is 45 days. Customer joins day 1, you get paid for new customer and they go on to buy again a few days later, and you get no more money, to me that's fine if it's explained clear on the merchant page what it is your getting paid for.

However the way I read that you see it, is if someone buys from a merchant more than 1 time in a cookie period then your only getting the first sale or however many sales before you get no more, and that being the case that's not very fair.

this is different for each merchant and is now listed on their info page which makes it pretty clear which merchants might not be a great deal for affiliates

e.g.

Argos

Action Referral Period 14 day(s)
Action Referral Occurrences 1 time(s)

B&Q

Action Referral Period 30 day(s)
Action Referral Occurrences 1 time(s)

Littlewoods Extra

Action Referral Period 14 day(s)
Action Referral Occurrences 1 time(s)

The better way

Argos Additions

Action Referral Period 10 day(s)
Action Referral Occurrences Unlimited

Strawberrynet

Action Referral Period 45 day(s)
Action Referral Occurrences Unlimited

Certainly worth checking out for all your merchants and pushing them for unlimited transactions during cookie duration

I've tested it.

Placed two small Argos orders one after each other - only the first one tracked!

Wow,

This is something we were not aware of and explains a few things. We learn something new all the time. Is this only indigenous to CJ or other networks as well?

What if the visitor purchases several items in the same order?

Would anyone have any objections, if we compiled the list of UK merchants and posted on the forum, saving affiliates having to check out each merchant..thus all can view at a glance?

I like you didn't know it was as bad as this, I was expecting it to be for something like.. If you join bet365 and make a bet you get paid for the 1 time, if person comes back in cookie period and bets again you get nothing, fair enough as the bounty is high.

But not to get another 20p from a merchant when you make them a repeat sale is not a good show at all.

Would we object if you did lots of work to help us all out??! - no problem mate!

Would also be interested to hear from those that represent merchants on the forum about what their thoughts are on this.

Here is the list with an only ONCE "Action Referral Occurrences"

I assume....some merchants listed might not apply to the query, for example a credit card which pays on the completed application or if it is a pay per lead program.

Obviously we need to establish if we have so far interpreted what "Action Referral Occurance actually" means.

From CJ Help

"Action Referral Occurrences: This is the number of times an advertiser will pay a commission to you for the same cookie during its referral period. For example, when a "web surfer" is referred by you to an advertiser's site, the tracking cookie is set and let's assume the referral period is 45 days. Don't forget the Argos incentive currently being offered....

For every single order over £100 they are giving a £10 gift voucher.

eg. You need new furniture (this is a true story!) and select 4 items - each over £100.

If you place 4 individual orders you get 4 vouchers. If you place 1 big order you get 1 voucher. What will users do? Yes, place 4 individual orders of course.

Who loses out? The affiliate who referred the customer! As Argos only pay on the first sale, no commission on the last three!

Hope that makes sense.

I've actually had a note next to my Argos links saying

"Argos - Free £10 voucher for each order over £100! (If you want a lot of items then place as several orders each just over £100 - you get more vouchers!"

I've been conning myself out of cash - I don't beleive it!!

A question to consider is, whether you would have promoted a merchant to the extent you had if you had pre-knowledge of this?....I know our answer to this in some instances.

Were we previously mis-informed / mis-guided?

What I want to know was if this was freely available prior to the upgrade? As it stands ...it makes a bit of a mockery of the whole cookie scenario.

More worrying though is how prevalent is this, for example does this exist on other networks?

We are still waiting to find out from TD if cases exist whereby if the customer visits the site of a particular merchant ANY TIME prior to usinhg your affiliate link, you are not credit with the sale like Allliance & Leicester.

Personally, I feel short changed....if this is the case.

Argos need to do serious amount of bridge building and serious sucking up to ones booty in order to re-establish rapport with affiliates & rebuild their program's already tarnished image.

There are plenty of other merchants to choose from for furniture across all the networks.

Gues who won muti channel retailer of the year?

-------------
This new award was destined for the company that could demonstrate that it is successfully utilising a range of media channels to promote its brands and products. With the Internet now recognised as the most important new channel, the judges were looking for evidence that retailers are fully embracing this medium. However, they also wanted to see how the retailer is able to link its Internet strategy through all aspects of its core business, from the front to the back-end of the operation.
-------------

Yup ARseGOS arf...arf..arf...just shows what the worth of these awards are don't it..!!

doh....if they're the best..!! can't wait to see the worst

Argos also won "Dumbest Merchant of the Year" award (a personally bestowed award in which I awarded them a lifetime of purchase free custom).

I do believe this feature was effectively hidden before via the cookies keep=no (merchants could opt to delete cookie after a sale). However this action occurence makes the whole thing more transaparent and looks as though it may be a little more sophisticated than it was before (making it more of a problem for me now!).

I now have 8 merchants with an action referral of 1 that are now marked for deletion from my sites unless the AM reviews the terms.

However, I wonder if the merchants actually understand the difference. For example:

Argos, 45 days, 1 time occurance
Additions, 14 days, unlimited

Wonder why they have different policies on action occurence?
