Data Feed Newbie Question

Hi, I'm completely new to data feeds, so I'd like to cut the basics and was wondering if anyone can direct me to a good newbie resource (idiots guide) - I'm 'assuming' that with a data feed (for e.g. price comparison purposes) - I'd need a database for a site, which is queried from my web page, the database being updated daily?

Any idiots guides would be appreciated, and what software other resources would I need?

• Downloading the feed from the buy.at management area
• Parsing the feed into your database
• Displaying the data on your site
• Unzipping feeds
