Vodafone Device Simulators
In conjunction with the new e-shop and blackberry storm launch, Vodafone this week have also launched new device simulators and the first one is the Blackberry Storm.
http://www.selflearning.co.uk/vodafo...-Storm-faq.swf
- The simulators will deliver an enhanced web-based, interactive view of a handset, allowing features, such as camera, email and internet, to be explored and potentially confusing usage areas, like setting up email, to be explained - all without the need to call customer support.
- These simulators have been designed based on user feedback to make things easier for our customers and front line teams, so we can:
- Reduce the confusion surrounding devices.
- Demonstrate how to use our handsets and applications.
- Identify what our customers find difficult and improve these areas in the future
Vodafone Device Simulators features include:
- Ten simulated help topics that will be ranked automatically based on the number of visitor clicks.
- A fully searchable, extensive knowledge-base accessed through the simulator for queries not featured in the ten simulated topics or getting started sections.
- Animated “Getting started” section, designed to visually demonstrate simple, initial “how to” scenarios identified as troublesome areas for customers, such as inserting a battery, locating the IMEI number and even simple things such as switching the phone on.
- Meaningful size comparisons, button descriptions, 360 degree animated views and the ability to view different colour options.
- Automated reporting system so we can analyse usage and identify key handset help areas and use this information to ensure our simulators are meeting our customer’s needs.
More information on the Blackberry Storm
The BlackBerry Storm is the first ever ‘clickable’ touchscreen smartphone and is available exclusively on Vodafone’s high speed 3G mobile broadband network. Its sleek and elegant black design offers messaging services including email, SMS and MMS in a single in-box. The BlackBerry Storm has superb sound quality and a 3.2 megapixel camera with video capabilities that exploit the large 3.25" screen's stunning clarity. It’s designed to deliver an advanced multi-media performance in either portrait or landscape view (automatically orientated when you rotate the device).
The new user interface combines the familiar dedicated "menu" and "escape" keys common to BlackBerry smartphones and adds the flexibility of a unique touch screen, giving you the multi-touches, taps and slides, familiar to touchscreen users but with the added benefit of a click to confirm a command. This allows you to easily highlight, scroll, pan and zoom, making navigation fast, easy and intuitive. Customers will also have the choice of using a full QWERTY, SureType® or multi-tap keyboard, depending on the rotation of the device (you can even change the orientation mid-message by simply rotating the Storm).
Advertising and PR
The BlackBerry Storm is a key product for Vodafone and we’re looking to position this as the best multimedia email device on the market. As a result, it's being supported in-store and by a full advertising campaign to include TV, outdoor, digital and press activity.
A great deal of press coverage and buzz has also been created following the PR launch last week. Some fantastic articles have appeared in publications such as the Evening Standard and in The Sun online. The BlackBerry Storm also won Best Mobile phone 2008 at the PocketLint awards last week.
Using the Storm
As BlackBerry devices are traditionally used by business customers, some customers new to using a BlackBerry may be unfamiliar with the way the BlackBerry Storm works. They may experience some differences getting started and business customers may also notice differences compared to using other BlackBerry devices, particularly related to the new innovative touch screen. Here are a few things to be aware of when talking to customers who may call to discuss problems they may encounter:
The BlackBerry button – The second button on the left, next to the green call key. Click on this key at any time to display a menu that is related to the content you are viewing on screen. For example, when sending a text, clicking on this will display various options for composing, saving and deleting messages.
Using the touch screen – This is a unique kind of entry that may take a while to get used to. As you enter characters or commands your fingers receives a subtle, mechanical “click”, letting you know the device is responding to your input. It flashes blue to indicate that the key has been selected and “clicks” when the character or symbol is fully selected.
Loss of signal when the battery is low - When the battery is extremely low, radio functionality (such as Bluetooth and connection to the network) start to power off to preserve the battery. This is standard with a BlackBerry device – the radio functionality switches itself off to prolong the battery life. Charging the handset will restore this.
Longer initial start up time – With a BlackBerry, the initial start up time may be longer than what a customer is used to. Customers may find it takes up to 2 – 3 minutes to register on the network for the initial start-up or when the battery is completely flat.
“Cookie” settings – To ensure that personal data remains safe if the handset is lost or stolen, “Cookies” settings are not activated on BlackBerry devices. So, if a customer has visited a website before and input user or password details, these will not be remembered. These just need to be re-input on future visits.
Saving phone numbers in contacts – The phone number field for entering contact details is not the first field that appears, like on a standard contact. To enter this, simply scroll through all the contact information fields.
More things to be aware of…
The following information, compiled as a result of product and usability testing on the Storm, may address some initial customer queries on using the device:
Perceived slow camera response time - Customers may perceive a slow response time when using the camera (about a 2 – 3 second delay). This is a comparable experience to other multimedia devices such as the Samsung G600 or F480.
Notification of unobtainable numbers – When a customer dials a number that is unobtainable, no audible or on-screen notification is given.
Location of the Vodafone Menu – This is not found in the main menu. Instead it can be found by selecting the main menu and then selecting the “set up” option.
MMS message preview – When creating an MMS, there is no option to preview the message before sending it. Instead, when the message is being built, it can be previewed by scrolling through it.
Saving Digital Right’s Managed (DRM) content – All DRM protected files downloaded (such as ringtones, games, wallpaper, etc) will automatically be saved in the "Media Centre" file (rather than a file of the customer’s choice) - pictures will be saved in the "Pictures" folder, music will be saved in the "Music" folder, videos will be saved in the "Video" folder and ringtones will be saved in the "Ringtone" folder. Anything else downloaded will be saved to the "Downloads" folder.
Viewing wallpaper in landscape orientation – If the Storm has the lock activated then the wallpaper will not be displayed if the phone is in landscape orientation. This will be resolved with a future software upgrade.
Opening PDF documents in an email (BIS VERSION ONLY) - With the BIS variant (consumer), PDF files are unable to be viewed within an email. To view PDFs, the document needs to be saved onto the Storm first.
Inability to receive incoming voice calls in a 2G area when downloading content or using any of the applications – This is a standard network issue – there is not a problem with the device. Please note that this only occurs in 2G areas and is NOT a feature of the 3G network. Customers should be advised to set up their voicemail so all calls get diverted.
These have been added to the Known Issues database (on the product page of CTI) and will be kept up to date so please refer to them in future.
Software upgrades
A software upgrade will be available within the next few weeks to correct some of the areas detailed above. This will be available via the standard upgrade methods and we are also looking at alternative ways to make it easier for customers to be upgraded. More information will be communicated when it is available.
Device Simulators
To support the launch of the Storm, we have some new-style Device Simulators. These are available through the help centre and CTI and include enhancements such as an animated getting started section, top ten simulated help topics (based on user feedback), and access to a fully searchable, extensive knowledge base for queries not featured in the simulated topics areas. Click here to view the BlackBerry Storm simulator.
