Are celebrity domain names a good investment?

I was just wondering what peoples thoughts are on buying celebrities domain names. I purchased one the other day and was thinking about buying more but I saw that a celebrity name sale on here the other day went for very little so I'm now wondering whether it's worth bothering.

Thanks

it depends on the celebrity and how premium they are.

They could take DRS the domain from you and say you were infringing their name etc, especially if they own the .com

Saying that, I have never had a problem with 1 and I have quite a few

I'd say not.....

In 10 years time when said celebrity is in rehab, left the country, is past their prime etc etc is that domain going to get any traffic or type in...

The same could be said about anything though - lots of sites are disposable and built around "current trends" so celebrity sites are no different

Yeah true but its faddy and nothing that builds long term revenue. You know the revenue day in day out that can be earned without waking up one morning and its gone...

was at dinner with frank schilling a month ago and his comments were that there are no faddy, fashionable, one trick pony names in his portfolio, only premium, generic domains with sustainable type in traffic....

Okay not saying that i'm against it...i own a pile of ipod domains for example but I've learned that they become obsolete very quickly!

Re: Are celebrity domain names a good investment?

Good way of putting it. However Frank Schilling is a bit of an exception though. Thats like comparing Mr corner shop owner to Sir Alan Sugar lol

They do become obsolete quickly however I think of it like this :

2 hours spent building the site and backlinking it etc = my own time
domain reg fee for 2 years = £6
add to reseller hosting = £0

Total real cost = £6

Now if that site only makes £100 in it's lifetime (they usually make much more), I have made £94 for 2 hours work.

Agreed it is not a long term investment, but if you have quite a few of these sites, complimenting your main income sites then it can't be bad for the amount of time and effort investing into them

Re: Are celebrity domain names a good investment?

Lol glad you can see the sense now go and make some money I want 20% commision of all the ones you make and which earn money lol !

The thing is this : 90% of the domains people reg, must have had a good idea / thought behind them to reg them in the first place. So instead of letting them dwindle away into nothing or keep re-regging them, make a little site and get a good ROI

I have had some real good earners from sites which have taken 1-2 hours to make !

Glad I could be of assistance

Reminds me of a certain lassie down in the Antipodes who it seems only buys domains when drunk.
