If you're self employed apparently (according to this guy that I met walking the dog - not dogging) he was self employed and went to claim the dole but was told as he had been paying NI Class 2 that he can't - he should have been paying NI Class 1.

The women on the phone said "you'd be surprised the number of self employed people didn't know that!"

So if you're a sole proprietor, then check with HMRC HM Revenue & Customs: National Insurance Contributions to see what you should/could pay.

Yeah I had them refuse me many moons ago because of a shortage in the correct NI contributions. Its does not matter to much though as if you cant claim Unemployment benefit you go onto social security. - I presume this is also better for the government stats of people claiming the old UB as you are no longer classed as claiming UB but SS.

I still have a massive gap in my NI payments because of working for dodgy companies in the past - but the contribution is voluntary. All this means is that if I am old and skint I wont get a state pension but will only be able to get SS.

Is'nt it class 2 and 4 he should have been paying if he was self employed, class 1 are only paid by employees.

Class 4 are billed based on your annual tax return, so anyone self employed earning over £5700 pa will pay class 2 and 4.
